In 1998, the U.S. Bureau of the Census conducted its Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal at selected sites in three states. This operation was a test of the plans and operations for taking the Census 2000. The maps and digital geographic files contained at this Web location portray the Dress Rehearsal sites and the geography used to organize the Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal data. The geographic areas apply ONLY to the Dress Rehearsal data. The boundaries are subject to change by the time the Census 2000 is done. Census tract and block boundaries and identification codes are likely to be different for the Census 2000. The Dress Rehearsal sites are:
Chester County, SC
Chesterfield County, SC
Darlington County, SC
Fairfield County, SC
Kershaw County, SC
Lancaster County, SC
Lee County, SC
Marlboro County, SC
Newberry County, SC
Richland County, SC (Plus all of Columbia City and Irmo in Lexington Co.)
Union County, SC
Menominee County, WI
City of Sacramento, CA
Note: The Dress Rehearsal sites include all of Columbia, SC, and Irmo, SC, parts of which extend into Lexington County, SC. The parts of Columbia city and Irmo city in Lexington county are included with the maps for Richland County, SC, but have a separate TIGER/Line® file.
There are three types of geographic products that were produced to support the Public Law 94-171 Census Redistricting Data Program. They are the maps showing various levels of Census geography, the TIGER/Line digital files, and the Map Sheet Corner Point files. Electronic versions of these products are available at this location. They are also available on CD-ROM along with the statistical data from the Dress Rehearsal. The CD-ROM version can be ordered by contacting our Customer Service Center at 301-763-INFO(4636) or from the Census Internet site.
Three types of maps were prepared to accompany Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal P.L. 94-171 data: P.L. 94-171 County Block Maps, P.L. 94-171 Voting District/State Legislative District Outline Maps, and Census Tract Outline Maps. The maps portray the three Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal sites: Menominee County, Wisconsin; Sacramento, California; and eleven counties in South Carolina.
The maps listed here are in the Portable Document Format (PDF). In order to view these files, you will
need the Adobe Acrobat Reader which is available free from the Adobe web site.
Note: We have discovered a problem with version 3.01 of the ADOBE Reader software which causes the shaded parts of the map images to appear as solid black when maps are viewed directly on the Internet through your browser. Version 3.01 will view the files correctly if they have been first saved to your hard drive. The new version 4.0 of the ACROBAT Reader displays the files properly.
Since most of the maps are large format (36 by 42 inches) the user would be most likely print them out using a large format plotter. To accommodate this need we have included an HPGL file version of each map on the CD-ROM product. Because of space limitations we have only included the HPGL version for a small sample of the Dress Rehearsal maps on this Internet site. These HPGL samples are in the MAPS/HPGL subdirectory. They include a County Tract Outline map (TRT_4557_001.hp) for Lexington County, SC, and P.L. County Block and VTD maps for Sacramento, CA (BLK_0664000_5.hp and VTD_0664000_5.hp). There is also a file for the map legend for each map type.
The P.L. 94-171 County block maps, the P.L. 94-171 Voting district/State Legislative District Outline maps and the Census Tract Outline maps in HPGL/2 format will not be available on-line. These files will be a custom product on CD-ROM/DVD available from the Geography Division in late summer of 2001.
The types of maps available are described below.
Some guidelines to help in the selection of a plotter to print the HP-GL (Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language) format Census 2000 maps.
The block-numbered maps show the greatest detail and most complete set of geographic information. These large-scale maps depict the smallest geographic entities for which the Census Bureau presents data--the census blocks--by displaying the features that form block boundaries and the numbers that identify them. The maps show the boundaries, names, and codes for American Indian/Alaska Native areas, county subdivisions, places, census tracts, census blocks and, for this series, the geographic entities that the States delineated in Phase 2, Voting District Project, of the Redistricting Data Program. These maps are in the MAPS/BLOCK subdirectory.
These county-based maps show the boundaries and codes for Voting Districts as delineated by the States in Phase 2, Voting District Project, of the Redistricting Data Program; the features underlying these boundaries; and the names of these features. Additionally, for states that submit the information, these maps show the boundaries and codes for State legislative districts and their underlying features. These maps also show the boundaries and names of American Indian/Alaska Native areas, counties, county subdivisions, and places. The maps will be available only for those states that participated in the Voting District Project. These maps are in the MAPS/VTD subdirectory.
These county maps show the boundaries and numbers of the census tracts, and names the features underlying the census tract boundaries. They also show the boundaries, names, and codes for American Indian/Alaska Native areas, counties, county subdivisions, and places. The scale and number of sheets vary by areal size of the county and the census tracts. These maps are in the MAPS/TRACT subdirectory.
The TIGER/Line files were created from the Census Bureau's TIGER (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) data base of selected geographic and cartographic information. They cover the geographic areas included in the Dress Rehearsal data collection operation. TIGER/Line files are typically used by people to provide the digital map base for their Geographic Information System or mapping software. For more information about these files (and the related COUNTS.TXT files) see the tlreadme.txt file and the TIGERDR.pdf documentation. These files can be found in the TIGER subdirectory.
NOTE: The Dress Rehearsal sites include all of Columbia, SC, and Irmo, SC, parts of which extend in to Lexington County, SC. These small areas are included with the maps for Richland County, SC, but have a separate TIGER/Line file.
Corner Point Files are text files containing bounding latitude and longitude coordinates for each map sheet. A Corner Point File is provided for each map type for each county or place. They are provided for those users who want a geo-referenced listing of the individual map sheets. These files are in the CORNER_P subdirectory.
