LandView r 5 for Windows r (September 17, 2002) What is LandView? LandView 5 is a CD/DVD-based "Federal Geographic Data Viewer" that provides database extracts from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Bureau of Census, and the United States Geological Survey. The LandView 5 system consists of two software programs: the LandView 5 database system and the MARPLOT r mapping system. These two systems communicate with each other to allow you to make map inquiries based on a selection of database records, and to make database inquiries based on a selection of map objects. For more information about this software go to: http://landview.census.gov/geo/landview/lv5/lv5.html The principal LandView 5 product is available as a 2 disc set on DVD-ROM containing the complete data set for all states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The eastern states are contained on the first DVD; the western states are contained on the second. It is also available on a custom CD-ROM with data for user specified states. LandView 5 Minimum System Configuration Note: LandView 5 has certain functions such as accessing the online EPA Envirofacts database that require Internet access and the availability of an Internet Browser. If you choose to install and run this program on a computer lacking an Internet connection and browser, these functions won't be available. LandView Help files are in PDF format and require installation of Adobe Acrobat Reader Version 4.0 or later. Available for free from Adobe's Web site: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html The minimum system configuration for PCs: Hardware Requirements: o Intel-compatible computer Pentium II 90 mHz or higher o DVD-ROM drive (national file) /CD-ROM drive (for state custom disc) o Hard disk drive with 20MB of free hard disk space o Screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher recommended Operating System: o Windows 98, Me, NT 4.0 (Service Pack 6), Windows 2000, Windows XP The minimum system configuration required for the Macintosh: Hardware Requirements: o DVD-ROM drive (national file) /CD-ROM drive (for state custom disc) o Hard disk drive with 20MB of free hard disk space o Screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher recommended Operating System: o Mac OS version 8.6 through 9.2.2, Mac OS X 10.1 Windows Computer Installation Instructions 1. Before installing the program, you should close all other Windows programs. In particular, you should either close or suspend your AntiVirus agent program. 2. Place this disc in your CD/DVD-ROM drive. In the Windows environment, a menu system should automatically appear if your computer system has "Auto Insert Notification" (generally referred to as "Autorun") enabled. This is normally the case, but if not, use the Windows Explorer to navigate to the root level of the CD/DVD-ROM disc and execute (double-click) the "AUTORUN.EXE" program located there. NOTE: After you have used the Autorun menu system to install the LandView 5 software, you may want to invoke this software simply by using the icons placed on your Windows desktop and not use the menu system any longer. In this case, simply hold down the "Shift" key when inserting the CD/DVD-ROM disc and the Autorun mechanism will be suppressed. If you choose to not use the Autorun menu system to access this disc, you can still install the LandView 5 system by using Start/Run. Macintosh Computer Installation Instructions 1. Insert DVD LV5 2. Open and read ReadMe file to view hardware and software requirements 3. Open install folder 4. Open mac folder 5. Drag LandView_5_Installer.hqx to desktop 6. Double-click LandView_5_Installer.hqx and ignore dialog concerning locked document 7. Double-click on LandView 5 Installer file 8. Click Continue on Aladdin Systems window 9. Click New Folder button and name it as you wish 10. While this new folder is still selected, click on Choose button 11. Click on Quit if you are finished or Continue to perform further installations 12. Drag LandView_5_Installer.hqx and LandView 5 Installer to trash. 13. While holding down Option key, Empty Trash LandView 5 is now installed. To use LandView in the future, make sure LV5 DVD is mounted and double-click on the LandView 5 file in the new folder you created. Running LandView 5 on a Novell Network Thus far, we have successfully installed and run LandView on a Novell Network. For more details see: http://landview.census.gov/geo/landview/lv5help/network.html Installing the LandView 5 Demonstration Program If you are not already familiar with the LandView 5 software, we recommend that you use the "LandView 5 Tutorial." You can start the tutorial from the main LandView 5 menu. Because the tutorial is based upon examples using Prince William County, Virginia if you have the CD-ROM product and it does not include data for this area, you will need to download the demonstration program from: http://landview.census.gov/geo/landview/lv5/lv5demo.html Running LandView 5 The LandView 5 system can be run by double-clicking on the "LandView 5" icon placed on the Windows desktop during installation. After starting up the LandView 5 system, you will notice MARPLOT and LandView (shown as "LV5") minimized icons in the Windows task bar at the bottom of your screen. By clicking on either of these icons you can move between the LandView and MARPLOT programs. NOTE: The taskbar is a gray rectangular bar located by default across the bottom of the Windows desktop. The taskbar contains a button for each program that is open. If you don't see your task bar, exit the LandView and MARPLOT programs and then right- click a blank area on the taskbar and then click Properties. Then check the "Always on top" box. Upon restarting LandView 5, you should now see the taskbar. The LandView 5 DVD-ROM product is a 2 disc set containing the complete data set for all states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. NOTE: If you need to change CD/DVD-ROM to access data for a state not contained on the CD/DVD-ROM in current use, you must exit both the LandView 5 and MARPLOT programs before changing the disc. Failure to do this will cause the LandView program to stop running and may lock up your computer. "Go to Map" Entry View The "Go to Map" function on the main LandView 5 menu starts MARPLOT (the mapping software) with a view of the continental United States that does not show Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. In MARPLOT, by selecting the "View", "Go to View" menu items and then selecting "Entire U.S.,Census", you can change the view to show Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico as well. If you prefer this as an entry view, you can designate it as your entry view by selecting "View", "Entry View" from the MARPLOT menu. If you would like the MARPLOT map to be automatically zoomed in on a particular state or state equivalent, you can do this by selecting "Census 2000 Demographic Profiles" on the main LandView 5 menu. Once in the Demographic Profile, you select the state geographic level tab and click the "Show on Map" function. Population Estimator The Population Estimator runs in two modes. For a radius 25 miles or less, the population estimator computes population and housing unit counts by tallying census block points that fall within the radius. For a radius beyond 25 miles, the population estimator computes population and housing unit counts by tallying census tract points that fall within the radius. NOTE: Because the Custom CD-ROM only includes census block points for the selected state(s) on the disc, we recommend that you map the radius whenever the center of the radius is close to a state boundary. This will show whether the radius extends beyond the state boundary. If it does extend into a state not included on CD/DVD-ROM and the radius is less than 25 miles, the numbers produced by the population estimator will not reflect the actual population and housing unit counts within the radius. To remedy this situation, the user can change the radius calculation from census block points to census tract points. The census tract points for all states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico are included on each CD/DVD-ROM. You make this change by clicking on the "Instructions for Using this Estimator" and then setting the radius threshold to a value less than the specified radius. Doing this will allow you to calculate the population and housing unit counts by census tracts within the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. This program (SHP2MIE.EXE) is installed in the LV5 folder on your C: hard drive. Once you have created the MIE file, you can import it into MARPLOT as a new layer by using the Import command that you can access through the MARPLOT File menu. For more details on this procedure, refer either to the MARPLOT Windows Help or MARPLOT User Manual. Urbanized Areas The MARPLOT "Urban Areas" layers show detailed boundaries of Census 2000 urbanized areas and urban clusters as defined in the Federal Register / Vol. 67, No. 84 / Wednesday, May 1, 2002/ Notice. The May 1 boundaries will agree with the Census 2000 SF3 urban/rural tabulations and do not reflect subsequent corrections to the May 1, 2002 Notice.
