      <descript>
These county-based reference maps show and label the census tracts as delineated to support 2010 Census data dissemination. These maps also show the boundaries and names of American Indian areas, Alaska Native areas, Hawaiian home lands, states, counties, county subdivisions, and places. Additionally, these maps display a base feature network including roads, railroads, and water bodies. These features are labeled as map scale permits. Each county is covered by one or more parent map sheets at a single scale. Inset map sheets at larger scales were created where there are clusters of census tracts that cannot be identified at the parent map scale. An index map showing the sheet configuration is included for all counties requiring more than one parent map sheet. The map sheet size is 36 by 32 inches. Each of these large format maps is produced in Adobe's portable document format (PDF). These georeferenced PDF files were created in compliance with the OGC PDF Geo-registration Encoding Best Practice Version 2.2 (OGC project document reference number OGC 08-139r2).
         <purpose>The Census Tract Reference Maps are created to support the 2010 Census data products, including the 2010 Census Redistricting Data Summary File, Summary File 1 (SF1) and Summary File 2 (SF2). The purpose of these maps is to provide locational reference of the census tracts in each county.</purpose>

      <logic>The Census Tract Reference Maps are graphical representations of extracts taken from the MAF/TIGER Database. The Census Bureau performed automated tests to ensure logical consistency of this database. Segments making up the outer and inner boundaries of a polygon tie end-to-end to completely enclose the area. All polygons were tested for closure. The Census Bureau uses its internally developed geographic update system to enhance and modify spatial and attribute data in the Census MAF/TIGER database. Standard geographic codes, such as FIPS codes for states, counties, municipalities, county subdivisions, places, American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian areas, and congressional districts are used when encoding spatial entities. The Census Bureau performed spatial data tests for logical consistency of the codes during the compilation of the original Census MAF/TIGER database files. Feature attribute information has been examined but has not been fully tested for consistency.</logic>
