Meeting Minutes

Minutes from the February 24, 2000 Meeting

Representatives in Attendance

• Mr. Broome briefed SCDD members on topics discussed at the February 1, 2000 FGDC Coordination Group meeting:
  • Votes on the CADD profile are presently low. It was reported that there are not enough votes to pass the standard. Coordination Group's representatives are encouraged to close their vote immediately.
  • Coordination Group Meeting Minutes are available in more detail on the FGDC website. To avoid repetition, it is best to visit their site.

• Fred Broome also reported on the recent FGDC Standards Working Group (SWG) meeting held on December 15, 1999:
  • Because the Standards Working Group met over two months ago, it is difficult to report on the status of standards as the information may be dated.
  • Meeting Minutes for the Standards Working Group meeting are available in more detail on the FGDC website. Mr. Broome recommended to the members to visit this site and the Status of FGDC Standards site to receive up to date information.

• Mr. Broome and Mr. Painter (FGDC) discussed the status of SCDD standards. The Governmental Unit Boundary Standard is currently on hold. The Address Data Content Standard is currently in the development stage right now. We are awaiting feedback from the SCDD members. The standard may be ready for public review in six months.

• Maureen Warren (NOS) briefed the SCDD on the structure and organization of the National Ocean Service. She distributed a folder containing an organizational chart as well as several project descriptions. If you would like any copies please contact GRaSS at (301)457-1056. Ms. Warren also introduced the first presenter from NOS, Mr. Grose.

• Mr. Grose presented the NOS Mapfinder available on the web at mapfinder.nos.noaa.gov. NOS Mapfinder provides a single internet location where the public can access a wide variety of NOS products for several coastal management uses. Mr. Grose explained the goals, components, and functionality of this website. He also provided copies of his PowerPoint presentation to the SCDD members. For a copy, call GRaSS at (301)457-1056.

• Peter Wiley, an economist with NOS's Special Projects office briefed the SCDD on the socio-economic components for the Coastal Assessment and Data Synthesis Framework (CA&DS). They are currently working on several databases such as demographics and employment statistics database, as well as a time series database containing population and housing statistics from the 1970, 1980, and 1990 census. • Mr. Farrow (NOS) presented NOS's Coastal and Environmental Monitoring. He demonstrated their website and interactive mapping as an integrated federal approach to monitoring. They are currently incorporating ESRI's Internet Map Server into their website as a way to query and display NOS information and inventories on the fly.

• Mr. LaPointe discussed data dissemination at NOS and his branch's involvement with web management. He stressed the importance of having a diverse staff (comprised of technical experts, artists, and content specialists). NOS's major website acts as a gateway to several other websites that they structure, develop, and manage.
