Notes:

The tallies for the number of counties include statistically equivalent entities such as the boroughs, census areas, city and boroughs, and municipality in Alaska; parishes in Louisiana; independent cities in Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia; The District of Columbia; municipios in Puerto Rico; islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands; and a variety of entities in the Pacific Island Areas.

The MCD totals do not include MCDs with a code equal to "00000." The Census Bureau assigns this default county subdivision code in some coastal and Great Lakes water where county subdivisions do not extend into the Great Lakes or out to the coastal three-mile limit.
