Q: Why am I having trouble starting LandView III on my new computer?
A: Recently, LandView III support staff began getting reports from users of two new error messages. Both occurred at LandView III startup but there the similarity ended.
The problem shows up in one of two ways, depending on which operating system you are using.
In Windows 95 and Windows 98, the error message reads:
In Windows NT and Windows 2000, users get a different error message:
Cause of Problem:
The problem seems to be related to the speed of the computer's "system bus". If the "central processing unit" a.k.a. CPU (the main chip in the computer) is the brain of the machine, the "system bus" is its spinal column. All of the information that gets processed in your computer's CPU moves through the system bus. Higher CPU speeds, like those of the new 350-450 megahertz chips, mean faster processing of information. Combine this with faster system bus speeds (100 megahertz on many new machines) and you get computers that are much faster than those that were typically available even a year ago.
Why is that a problem for LandView III? LandView III software is written in a programming language that was designed to operate in the much slower operating environment of Windows 3.1. On the newer, faster machines, LandView III just doesn't start as quickly as the computer and the operating system think it ought to. The operating system (Windows 95, 98 or NT) interprets the delay as a problem with the program and fires off an error message to the user.
Problem Solution:
For computers with a 100 Mhz system bus, the FOXW2600.EXE file contains an updated copy of the file FOXW2600.ESL which updates the LandView III software library to cope with the higher bus speeds.   YOU DO NOT NEED TO INSTALL THIS FILE IF YOU HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED EITHER OF THE PROBLEMS DESCRIBED ABOVE.
