2009 TIGER/Line^® Shapefiles Organizational Structure

Organizational Structure

Shapefile organization is based on the hierarchical relationship of Census Bureau Geography (see diagram in [PDF] format or a [TEXT] description).
Shapefiles are released in up to four types of coverages:
- Nation-based
- American Indian Area-based
- State-based
- County-based
The table below lists each type of geography and the coverage(s) at which each is available.
