1The boundaries for tribal subdivisions on AIRs and ORTLs, and well as the outer boundaries for AIRs and ORTLs, are collected via the Census Bureau’s annual Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS).

*AIR (American Indian Reservation):  A type of legal geographic entity that is a recognized American Indian land area with a boundary established by final treaty, statute, executive order and/or court order and over which the tribal government of a federally recognized American Indian tribe has governmental authority.

*ORTL (Off-Reservation Trust Land):  A type of legal geographic entity that is a recognized American Indian land area for which the United States federal government holds fee title in trust for the benefit of a tribe or for an individual American Indian.
