back to Public Education Finances page
The files described below contain financial information for public elementary-secondary school systems as displayed in tables 15, 16, and 17 of the Statistical Tables for Public Elementary-Secondary Education Finances: 1993-94, 1994-95, and 1995-96 (available only directly through Census Bureau's Governments Division or via the Internet) and in tables 21, 22, and 23 in the Census Bureau publication 'Public Education Finances: 1992-93' (GF/93-10).
Table 15 (21 in 1993) provides revenue, expenditure, debt, and enrollment data, while tables 16 and 17 (22 and 23 in 1993) provide percent distribution of revenues and per pupil expenditure data.
This documentation provides a brief identification of the data items, their location in the tables, and field names. For complete information about public elementary-secondary school system file data, please see the complete file documentation and the introductory and explanatory text that accompanies the statistical tables. Following the file layout description, formulas show the data items from the complete data file used to calculate the selected data items contained in these files.
Unlike the statistical tables, these files include all elementary-secondary school systems from the complete data file, regardless of enrollment size.
Federal Information Processing System (FIPS) geographic information is provided in these files. Information about matching counties to their codes is available from the Census Bureau's web site under State and County Demographic and Economic Profiles.
For further information about these files or the survey by which these data are collected, contact the F-33 staff by e-mail at elsec@census.gov, by telephone at 1-800-622-6193, or by regular mail at:

DATA FILE FORMAT
The files are comma delimited ASCII files, with alphanumeric data
enclosed in double quotes ["]. The first record of each file contains
the field names referenced in the FILE LAYOUT section below.
The data have been divided into three files to limit the number of
records in each file, which should allow users to import data into
most spreadsheet or database software packages. These files are
divided as follows:
Alabama through Massachusetts (including the District of Columbia)
Michigan through North Dakota
Ohio through Wyoming
If possible when importing the comma delimited files into a spreadsheet
or database, specify the format of the following fields as 'text'
(rather than 'numeric'): GOVSID and FIPS.
