NA Not available. Respondents were not asked detailed health insurance questions
about direct-purchase coverage before the March 1995 Current Population Survey (CPS).
1/ Includes CHAMPUS (Comprehensive Health and Medical Plan for Uniformed
Services)/Tricare, Veterans, and military health care.
2/ Implementation of a new March Current Population Survey (CPS) processing system.
3/ Figures are revised to correct for nice omitted weights from the original March
1992 CPS file.
4/ Implementation of Census 1990 based population controls.
5/ Data collection method changed from paper and pencil to computer-assisted
interviewing.
6/ Health insurance questions were redesigned. Increases in estimates of
employment-based and military health care coverage may be partially due
to questionnaire changes. Overall coverage estimates were not affected.
7/ Beginning with the March 1998 CPS, people with no coverage other than
access to Indian Health Service are no longer considered covered by health
insurance; instead, they are considered to be uninsured. The effect of
this change on the overall estimates of health insurance coverage is
negligible; however, the decrease in the number of people covered by
Medicaid may be partically due to this change.
8/ Estimates reflect the results of follow-up verification questions and of
Census 2000 based population controls.
9/ Implementation of a 28,000 household sample expansion.
10/ The 2003 CPS asked respondents to choose one or more races. White alone refers
to people who reported White and did not report any other race category. The use of
this single-race population does not imply that it is the preferred method of presenting
or analyzing data. The Census Bureau uses a variety of approaches. Information on
people who reported more than one race, such as “White and American Indian and
Alaska Native” or “Asian and Black or African American,” is available from Census
2000 through American FactFinder. About 2.6 percent of people reported more than
one race in 2000.
11/ The 2001 CPS and earlier years asked respondents to report only one race.
The reference groups for these years are: White, White not Hispanic, Black, and
Asian and Pacific Islander.
12/ Black alone refers to people who reported Black or African American and did not
report any other race category.
13/ Asian alone refers to people who reported Asian and did not report any other race
category.
14/ Because Hispanics may be of any race, data in this report for Hispanics overlap
with data for racial groups. Being Hispanic was reported by 11.8 percent of White
householders who reported only one race; 2.7 percent of Black householders who reported
only one race; 26.5 percent of American Indian and Alaska Native householders
who reported only one race; and 10.0 percent of Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific
Islander householders who reported only one race. Data users should exercise caution
when interpreting aggregate results for the Hispanic population because this
population consists of many distinct groups that differ in socio-economic
characteristics, culture, and recency of immigration. Data were first collected for
Hispanics in 1972.
15/ These estimates from the 2005 ASEC were revised based on improvements to the
algorithm that assigned coverage to dependents, and there was an adjustment to the
weights.
Note: Respondents were not asked detailed questions about nativity before the
March 1994 Current Population Survey (CPS).
