1 1986 and previous years are not comparable. Metropolitan Areas (MAs) were
redefined by the Office of Management and Budget as of June 30, 1984. These
definitions were introduced in January 1986 and differ from those used for
earlier HVS estimates for Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs).
MAs were redefined again in 1992 and 1993. These definitions were introduced
in January 1995.

4 Data on condition of unit not collected after December 1971. Vacancy rates
for 1956 to 1967 are estimates: Figures were derived by assuming the ratio

data reported in 1968.

Beginning in first quarter 2005, the Current Population Survey/Housing Vacancy Survey is using the
new metropolitan and micropolitan statistical definitions which were announced by the Office of Management
and Budget (OMB) in June 2003, and were based on the application of the 2000 standards to Census 2000 data.
OMB announced updates as of December 2003, based on application of the 2000 standards to more recent Census Bureau estimates.
