Scientists and Engineers in Japan: 1990
Demographic Developments in Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union, Present and Future
Introduction
This is the eighth in a series of reports by the Eurasia Branch. This bulletin highlights some of our current work in the areas of demography and economics. The focus is on examining and interpreting new and existing data sets produced by statistical organizations of Eastern Europe, the former Soviet states and Asia. The first article of this issue features an overview of Donetsk (Ukraine), a city burdened by the relics of the former Soviet military-industrial sector, but benefitting from a political leadership that includes many reformers. The second article reports on scientists and engineers in Japan, in regard to their demographic make-up, their concentration by occupation and industry, and educational attainment. The final article describes the underlying assumptions used in deriving population projections for the countries of the former Soviet Union through the middle of the 21st century.
