2010 Census Begins in Alaska

U.S. Census Bureau Director Robert Groves officially started 2010 Census by conducting the first enumeration in Noorvik, AK. Upon arriving in Noorvik, Groves traveled by dogsled to meet with residents and leaders. He then walked to the home where the first enumeration took place. Alaska's sparsely settled areas are traditionally the first to be counted. The early start allows census takers to reach remote villages while the frozen ground allows access by bush plane, dogsled and snowmobile. They also must reach residents before they to hunt and fish or travel for warm-weather jobs following the spring thaw.
