Lesson Plan
The year 1970 was the first time Hispanics were counted as a group by the U.S. Census Bureau, and they totaled 9.1% of the population. Today they total 13%, and with a birth rate higher than most other groups, the number will continue to rise. The 2000 Census clearly indicates this growth as the following lesson illustrates to my middle school students the increase in Hispanics on a community, county, state, and national level.

Marin Brumett

Ms. Marin Brumett was born and raised in the Temple Hill community of Barren County, Kentucky. She graduated from Kentucky University with a B.S degree in Education, majoring in Spanish with a minor in English. Ms. Brumett is currently working toward a Masters degree in Education, specializing in Spanish.

Teaching is the only career that Ms. Brumett ever desired to pursue. She believes it is a God-given talent that she is destined to do and she loves it!

Ms. Brumett currently teaches a 7th grade Introductory Spanish class and a Spanish class for high school credit to 8th graders, both at Russell County Middle School in Russell Springs, KY. In addition, she teaches community education classes in Spanish, including Spanish for Agricultural Purposes and Spanish for Health Care Workers. In the latter class, Ms. Brumett created her own handbook to teach from and to distribute to participants.

Prior to the lesson plan contest, Ms. Brumett used Census data as a basis for citing the number of Hispanics in Kentucky as well as the United States. She says, “This data allows my students to know accurate numbers versus estimations.” She has used this lesson for two years and thought it would be a great fit with the contest regulations.

Ms. Brumett’s hobbies include working on her parents’ farm, gardening, reading, and traveling.
