Specifically, our students have been learning about line plot graphs, line graphs, bar graphs, pictographs and stem and leaf plot graphs. To culminate this unit, our students used data from the 2000 U.S. Census web site to demonstrate their knowledge. This was a group activity using lap top computers. Each student received both an individual and a group grade.....

Monica Consalvo

Ms. Monica Consalvo was born and raised in Port Jefferson, New York. She is a graduate from the school district in which she now teaches. She attended Dowling College, New York as an undergraduate with a Major in Psychology and Anthropology. She has a Masters Degree in Special Education and is currently working on her administrative degree through Stony Brook University, New York.

Ms. Consalvo is currently a 6th grade inclusion teacher for math, writing, and reading at Port Jefferson Middle School in Port Jefferson, New York. She has been teaching for 6 years. She began teaching Special Education on the high school level and has also taught inclusion social studies for grades 6,7,9,and 11, and regular economics for grade 12.

Ms. Consalvo’s life-long dream was to become a teacher. She wanted to be able to affect young people’s lives and instill in them the love of learning.

Ms. Consalvo participated in this contest because she loves to see how creative she can be when designing lessons using technology, incorporating the state's standards and making learning FUN! Her goal is to always have her students think outside the box, and this lesson plan is a prime example.

Prior to the contest, Ms. Consalvo used census data in her social studies classes through charts and graphs for document-based questions.

Ms. Consalvo’s hobbies include travel, reading and hiking.

Meg Ryan

Ms. Megan Ryan was born and raised in Centereach, New York. She has a Bachelor of Science Degree from State University of New York at Cortland and is currently working towards her Masters Degree at Stony Brook University, New York.

She is currently a 6th grade math teacher at Port Jefferson Middle School in Port Jefferson, New York. She has been teaching for 3 years.

Ms. Ryan decided to become a teacher because she loves math and wants to make sure the children she encounters love it as well. She wants to make a difference in the future.

Ms. Ryan participated in the contest in order to create a lesson that integrated technology and social studies into a math lesson. Prior to the contest, she had never used census data in the classroom.

Ms. Ryan’s hobbies include playing with her beagle, Darla, and playing the piano.
