HOUSING PRINTED REPORTS

In addition to reports from the American Housing Survey, the Housing and Household Economic Statistics Branch also releases reports and Internet files based on other Housing Surveys such as the Survey of Market Absorption and the Housing Vacancy Survey. All reports are available in PDF format on the Bureau's web site. Ask the Customer Services Center (301-763-INFO(4636)) about obtaining reports in printed form.

Market Absorption of Apartments (Series H-130). Quarterly and annual reports. Presents data for the United States and regions concerning the rate at which nonsubsidized, privately financed, unfurnished units in buildings with five or more units are rented or sold (that is, absorbed).  Subscription is available from the Government Printing Office, 202-512-1800. GPO S/N: 703-020-00000-3. $18. Also available in PDF and in downloadable files.

Characteristics of Apartments Completed (Series H-131). Annual report providing statistics on apartments completed in the United States and regions. Covers the number of apartments completed and the percent absorbed (that is, rented) within 3 months, for each region by rent range.

Housing Vacancy and Home OwnershipQuarterly data released in press releases.  Detailed tables and annual statistics available online. Provides information on rental and homeowner vacancy rates, and characteristics of units available for occupancy.

New York City Housing and Vacancy SurveyDetermines the vacancy rate for New York City's rental stock, as required by law. New York City also uses the data to measure the quality and quantity of housing and the demographic characteristics of the city's residents. 1999 data available online. Earlier surveys available on CD-ROM.

Residential Finance Survey (Series CH-4-1) Provides data on the characteristics of the financing of homeowner and rental properties, including characteristics of the mortgages, properties, and property owners. There are two files: a homeowner property file and a rental and vacant property file. There are two record types on each file: a property record (information provided by the property owner), and a mortgage record (information provided by the mortgage lender). The potential universe is about 66,000,000 properties securing about 38,000,000 mortgages, plus all mortgage lenders in the United States. About 70,000 properties were in this sample. This survey has been conducted as part of the 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000 Censuses of Housing.  Also available on CD-ROM. The 2001 data have not been released on CD-ROM.
