Subject Summary Tape Files (SSTF)

Available on CD-ROM, the Subject Summary Tape Files (SSTF), provide a variety of data on subjects such as the foreign-born population, the Black population, persons of Hispanic origin, education in the United States, and more. Data are provided for a variety of geographic areas. Depending on the file, they may include data for the U.S. as a whole, regions, divisions, states, metropolitan areas, and large counties and places.

The Foreign-Born Population of the United States (SSTF01)

Contains sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on the characteristics of the foreign-born population in the United States. Data are cross-classified by place (region, country) of birth of foreign-born population.

Population subjects include number of persons, age, sex, marital status, citizenship status, year of entry into the United States, language spoken at home and the ability to speak English, and more. Housing subjects include number of housing units, kitchen and plumbing facilities, tenure (owner/renter occupied), and more.

Ancestry of the Population in the Unites States (SSTF02)

Contains sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on the characteristics of the foreign-born population in the United States. Data are cross-classified by 71 ancestry categories of persons in the United States.

Population subjects include number of persons, age, sex, marital status, citizenship status, year of entry into the United States, language spoken at home and the ability to speak English, and more. Housing subjects include number of housing units, kitchen and plumbing facilities, tenure (owner/renter occupied), and more.

Contains sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on the characteristics of persons of Hispanic origin in the United States. Data are cross-classified by 25 Hispanic origin categories of persons in the United States.

Population subjects include number of persons, age, sex, marital status, citizenship status, year of entry into the United States, language spoken at home and the ability to speak English, and more. Housing subjects include number of housing units, kitchen and plumbing facilities, tenure (owner/renter occupied), and more.

Characteristics of Adults with Work Disabilities, Mobility Limitations, or Self-Care Limitations

Contains sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on the characteristics of noninstitutionalized persons 16 years of age and over with disabilities. Data are cross-classified by work disability, mobility, and self-care limitation status, which in turn are cross-classified by whether the disability entirely prevents working.

Population subjects include number of persons, age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, persons in group quarters, educational attainment, school enrollment, veteran status, and more. Housing subjects include number of housing units, kitchen and plumbing facilities, tenure (owner/renter occupied), and more.

Contains sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on the characteristics of persons of Asian and Pacific Islander origin in the United States. Data are cross-classified by 24 Asian and Pacific Islander categories of persons in the United States.

Population subjects include number of persons, age, sex, marital status, citizenship status, year of entry into the United States, language spoken at home and the ability to speak English, and more. Housing subjects include number of housing units, kitchen and plumbing facilities, tenure (owner/renter occupied), and more.

CD-ROM containing sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on education in the United States. File contains data on educational attainment (15 categories), school enrollment, and type of school, which are cross-classified by age and sex.

File also contains data on work status and earnings in 1989, both cross-classified by sex and educational attainment. Also includes data on the employment status, work experience, and veteran status of persons 16 years of age and older in the United States. Data are cross-classified by age and sex.

Metropolitan Housing Characteristics (SSTF-07)

Contains sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on the characteristics of metropolian housing in the United States. Data are cross-classified by total number of persons, four categories of race (White; Black; American Indian; Eskimo, or Aleut; Asian or Pacific Islander), Hispanic origin (of any race), and White, not of Hispanic origin.

Population subjects include age, educational attainment, employment status, marital status, presence and age of chidren, and more. Housing subjects include number of housing units, rooms and bedrooms in unit, units in structure, kitchen and plumbing facilities, and more.

Housing of the Elderly (SSTF08)

Contains sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on the characteristics of housing units with householders 50 years of age and over. Data are cross-classified by age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin of the household, household size, married couple family householder, and married couple family householder with husband or wife absent.

Data includes number of persons and housing units, year structure built, rooms and bedrooms in unit, house heating fuel, kitchen and plumbing facilities, source of water, sewage disposal, tenure, real estate taxes, rent, telephone and vehicle availability and more. Data are also included for the number of person 60 years of age and older living in group quarters.

Housing Characteristics of New Units (SSTF09)

Contains sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on the characteristics of new housing in the United States. The new units were built between January 1985 and March 1990.

Population subjects included age, race, HIspanic origin, occupation of householder, presence and age of children, marital status, income, and more. Housing subjects include number of new housing units, rooms and bedrooms in unit, units in structure, vacancy status, tenure, and more.

Characteristics of American Indians by Tribe and Language (SSTF13)

Contains sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on the American Indian population in the United States. With the exception of data by American Indian language spoken at home, data are cross-classified by American Indian persons and American Indian tribes.

Population subjects include number of persons, age, sex, persons in group quarters, marital status, educational attainment, veteran status, and more. Housing subjects include the number of housing units, units in structure, persons per room, kitchen and plumbing facilities, sewage disposal, source of water, heating fuel, and more.

Geographic Mobility in the United States (SSTF15)

CD-ROM containing sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on geographic mobility in the United States. Ssummary statistics are provided on the mobility of the population for all persons 5 years and over in the United States. Subjects can be cross-tabulated to present data for non-movers, movers with state, county, and metropolitan/non-metropolitan areas; and flows between states or metropolitan/non-metropolitan areas.

Data are presented on age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, marital status, household type and relationship, persons in group quarters, tenure, school enrollment, educational attainment, industry, occupation, employment status, income, and poverty.

CD-ROM containing sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on fertility in the United States. Most subjects are cross-classified by marital status of women and by married-couple families.

Data are presented on the number of persons, age, race and Hispanic origin of husband and wife, children ever born, country or region of birth, year of entry into the United States, citizenship, shcool enrollment, educational attainment, occupation, and more. These data are also classified by the following race and Hispanic origin categories: White, Black, American Indian, Eskimo, orAleut; Asian or Pacific Islander; other race; Hispanic origin (of any race); White, not of Hispanic origin; and other race, not of Hispanic origin.

The Older Population in the United States (SSTF19)

CD-ROM containing sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on the characteristics of the elderly population in the United States. Contains statistics on persons 60 years of age or older and on families with a household 60 years of age or older.

Data file includes data on age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, persons in group quarters, household type and relationship, poverty status, language spoken at home, abiltiy to speak English, ancestry, and more.

Data are also available for the following subjects, each of whic is tabulated for total persons, two race categories (White and Black) and for persons of Hispanic origin. These subjects include age, sex, household type and relationship, family type, marital status, children, grandchildren, veterans, nativity, place of birth, school enrollment, eduztional attainment, income, poverty, and more.

CD-ROM containing sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on the journey to work of workers 16 years of age and over and selected characteristics of those workers. File provides information on the means of transportation to work, time leaving home to go to work, travel time to work, private vehicle occupancy, and more.

Also contains data on the number of persons, age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, household type and relationship, educational attainment, number of housing units, tenure, vehicle availability, industry, occupation, class of worker, and earnings in 1989.

Earnings by Occupation and Education, SSTF22: U.S.

Contains sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on the occupations, earnings, and education of persons 18 years of age and over in the experience civilian labor force who worked and had earnings in 1989.

Data file contains information on the number of persons in detailed occupation categories which are cross-classified by age, sex,a nd five categories of race (White, Black, American Indian, Eskimo, or Aleut, Asian or Pacific Islanders, other race) as well as by Hispanic origin (of any race). These subjects, in turn, are cross-classified by educational attainment, usual hours worked, hourly earnings, and arrnual earnings in 1989.
