U.S. Population Projected at 420 Million in 2050
In 2050, the nation's population will be 420 million people, according to Census Bureau projections. Half the population will be White alone, not Hispanic; the other half will be other races and Hispanics. (Note Hispanics may be any race.) In 2000, Hispanics comprised about 12.6 percent of the population; in 2050 we project they will comprise about 24.4 percent of the population. For projections data, go to "Projections" on the Census Bureau home page and then to "Interim projections consistent with Census 2000 (released March 2004)," and select the table of your choice.

Detailed American Housing Survey Data for Counties and Cities
The American Housing Survey (AHS) is a gold mine of data on the nation's housing stock, owner/renter characteristics, housing costs, neighborhood conditions, and other topics. The survey collects data on many more housing subjects than does the decennial census. We release these data for the nation as a whole and for a subset of metropolitan areas. One special feature of the metro reports based on the AHS is the availability of data for county or city components within the metro area. In the tables, you'll note that many tables include columns for "Selected Subareas" further broken down as "Area One," "Area Two," and "Area Three." On the last page of the report is a list of the three subareas. For example, the subareas in the Columbus, Ohio metro report are Columbus city, Balance of Franklin County (excluding Columbus), and Licking County. For access to the AHS data, go to "Housing" on the Census Bureau home page, then to "American Housing Survey data," and select your choice.

Fact of the Day
Data on Population with "Severe Work Disability" Collected in the
Customers occasionally call us asking for data on people having a "severe" work disability that renders them unable to work; customers look for these data in decennial census files such as Summary File 3 and cannot find them there. "Does the Census Bureau collect such data?" they ask. We do collect such data in the monthly Current Population Survey (CPS), the source of many other demographic and social data. The CPS uses several questions to determine if individuals are limited in their ability to work or are unable to work. The questions are not designed and have not been tested with the intent of measuring disability. If a person meets certain criteria, he or she is considered to have a work disability; if they meet several of the criteria together (e.g., person under 65 years old and covered by Medicare in previous year), he or she is considered to have a severe work disability. In 2004, for example, about 22 percent of the population age 65 to 69 reported having a work disability; 8 percent said the disability was "severe." To find the data on severe work disability, go to Subects A to Z and select "Disability"; on the disability page, select "Find Data Disability by Survey" and then on "1995-2004 Internet Tables."

New Features in American FactFinder
Look for more data from the American Community Survey in the American FactFinder -- and new ways to access these data. On January 6, the Census Bureau added new options for accessing ACS data in AFF. Users can now generate multi-year profiles, ranking tables, and narrative profiles and access the public use microdata. Go to the FactFinder on the home page and then click on "Data Sets " in AFF. Select the "American Community Survey" tab at the topic and voila.
Also, under the Decennial Census tab, look for the two new versions of the Summary Files (SFs 1 and 3) for the 109th Congress (SF 1 is based on the short-form or 100-percent data and SF3 on the long-form or sample data). Generalized boundary files for the 109th Congressional Districts are also available. More precise boundary information will be available in the 2004 TIGER/Line Files planned for release this month.
