Fact of the Day

South Carolina Has Highest Proportion of Mobile Homes

About 19 percent of the housing units in South Carolina are mobile homes, the highest of any state, according to results from the 2004 American Community Survey. North Carolina (16.8 percent), New Mexico (16.6 percent), West Virginia (16.0 percent), and Alabama (14.7 percent) round out the top five. The U.S. average is 7.1 percent. This is one of the many ranking tables based on the 2004 American Community Survey (see "Hot Tip"). Three Florida counties -- Polk, Pasco, and Lake -- lead large counties (population: 250,000 or over) across the U.S. in the percent of mobile homes; about a quarter of homes there are mobile. The ranking tables can be found in the American FactFinder; pay close attention to the upper and lower bounds shown in the tables, which may greatly affect rankings.

Hot Tip

New Ranking Tables From the American Community Survey

One of the major advantages of the American Community Survey (ACS) is the wealth of small-area data available on a yearly basis. To help you put the data for such areas into perspective, we have dramatically increased the number of ranking tables for states, counties, and places, with the release of the 2004 data in late August. More of the ranking tables cover counties and places than before. To find these and other data from the 2004 ACS, go to the American FactFinder and select "Data Sets." Then select the "2000-2004 American Community Survey" tab and select the kind of table you want; you'll find the ranking tables here. In using the ranking tables, be sure to note the upper and lower bound shown in each table; they may greatly influence the rankings and apparent differences in the rank order.
