Fact of the Day

Men Less Likely To Visit a Doctor

Results from the 2001 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) suggest that men are less likely than women to visit the doctor and to use medical services. Almost one-third of men reported never seeing a doctor in the past 12 months; at the other end of the spectrum, about a quarter reported seeing a doctor three or more times during this period. For women, 21 percent did not see a doctor while 36 percent made three or more visits. This pattern also showed up for visits to the dentist, hospital stays, and the use of prescription medicine. The findings appear in a newly issued report available in PDF.
