Super Bowl - Super Cities
New York ranks first on the list of the nation's most populous cities with an estimated 8.3 million people. Boston ranks 23rd with 595,698 people, and Glendale ranks 16th with 6.3 million people. Super Bowl XLII will be played Feb. 3 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. To commemorate this occasion, the Census Bureau has compiled a collection of facts examining the demographics of the host area, as well as the cities represented by the contenders, in this year's edition of our nation's most celebrated sporting event.

States in Focus
The Census Bureau is releasing a series of profiles for every state as they approach their 2008 primary or caucus. The profiles include a look at the population, selected characteristics, and 2004 voting percentage of each state. Several states are available now with Florida (1/24) and Maine (1/31) on the horizon. Profiles for the Super Tuesday states are scheduled for availability on January 30th. You can sign up to be notified as new profiles become available through the Question & Answer Center. Just enter 5213 in the keyword search box and click Go. Population
Educational Attainment in the United States: 2007. Internet tables detailing education levels by age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, marital status, nativity, occupation, and other demographic characteristics at the national level.
Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE): 2005. These tables provide estimates of income and poverty for states and counties, as well as estimates of poverty and population for school districts, median household income, and poverty rates of various age groups. SAIPE provides annual updates for the administration of federal programs and the allocation of federal funds to local jurisdictions.
States In Focus. Profiles for each state providing a look at the population, selected characteristics, and 2004 voting percentage as they approach their 2008 primary or caucus. The
profiles will be released on a flow basis.
The Effects of Taxes and Transfers on Income and Poverty in the United States: 2006. Estimates of income and poverty for various demographic groups using a series of alternative income definitions that take into account government taxes and transfers. These estimates show how income distributions change when the definition of income is varied to reflect the inclusion or exclusion of different components. The estimates are for calendar year 2006 as collected in the 2007 Annual Social and Economic Supplement (ASEC) to the Current Population Survey and are similar to those released from the 2006 ASEC (calendar year 2005 estimates) in the Effect of Taxes and Transfers on Income and Poverty in the United States: 2005.

The report highlights the age of the states' work force, job gains and losses, industries in which older workers are concentrated, job stability, and earnings.

Internet files showing demographic indicators such as infant mortality, life expectancy, fertility rates, net migration, and population growth for 228 countries and areas of the world. Includes current estimates and moving population pyramids that project age and sex distributions to 2050.
Living Arrangements of Children: 2004. Report examining the diversity of children's living arrangements, from living with two biological parents to living in blended families. These national-level data come from the Survey of Income and Program Participation.
Maternity Leave and Employment Patterns: 1961-2003. Report analyzing trends in women's work experience before their first child, identifying the maternity leave arrangements they use before and after the birth, and examining how rapidly they return to work.
Voting-Age Population by State: July 1, 2007. Reports for each state providing the total number of residents, the total population 18 and older, and the percentage of the total population 18 and older.
What It's Worth: Field of Training and Economic Status: 2004. Series of tables from the Survey of Income and Program Participation examines the relationship between field of training and monthly earnings. We've seen the data showing that more education usually equals a higher salary. But what fields of study have the greater payoff?
Who's Minding the Kids? Child Care Arrangements: Spring 2005. Tables providing data on child care arrangements of preschoolers and grade-schoolers according to various demographic characteristics of the mother. They also profile children who care for themselves on a regular basis and examine the size of weekly child care payments made by selected characteristics of the family.

Economic Census and Surveys
Top-Ranked States by Industry. Alaska led the nation in per capita revenue for chiropractor's offices. Delaware led in shoe sales; Montana in bars and taverns. Economically speaking, every state is tops in something. A new Web page -- highlighting facts from the 2002 Economic Census about every state by receipts per capita for every industry -- helps promote the 2007 Economic Census, now under way.
Current Industrial Reports (CIR). The CIR program provides monthly, quarterly and annual measures of industrial activity. The primary objective of the CIR program is to produce timely, accurate data on production and shipments of selected products. The data are used to satisfy economic policy needs and for market analysis, forecasting and decision-making in the private sector.
- Consumption on the Cotton System and Stocks: December 2007. This monthly report shows the consumption of cotton and manmade fiber staple by domestic manufacturing plants. North Carolina consumed more of these products in November than all other states combined.
- Glass Containers: December 2007. Manufacturers produced 1.7 billion beer bottles, and another 101 million liquor bottles, in November. This monthly report shows shipments, production and stocks of manufactured glass containers.
- Flour Milling Products: Fourth Quarter 2007. Kansas had the largest daily capacity of any state in wheat production in the third quarter of 2007. This quarterly manufacturing report shows production, stocks and capacity of flour milling products.

County and City Data Book. Where is the fastest growing labor force? Which city gets the most rainfall? This data book provides population, housing and business data for counties and cities with 25,000 or more residents, and places of 2,500 or more residents. It incorporates information from government agencies and private nonprofit organizations, covering everything from area populations to vital statistics.
St. Patrick's Day and Irish-American Heritage Month (March). The Census Bureau joins the annual celebration of all things Irish by providing this statistical information from its demographic and economic subject areas.
Women's History Month (March). In commemoration of this annual observance highlighting the contributions of women, this edition provides statistical information on topics such as earnings, educational attainment, business ownership, careers, military service, and marriage.

Ancestry
Thirty-six million US residents claim Irish ancestry. Irish is the second most reported ancestry, trailing only German. Twenty-four percent of Massachusetts residents are of Irish ancestry, compared to a corresponding rate of 12 percent for the nation as a whole. 2006 State Government Finances. Online tables providing comprehensive financial statistics for all 50 state governments (includes all agencies, institutions, commissions, and public authorities that operate separately or somewhat autonomously from the central government). Contains detailed data for each state on revenue by type (such as taxes and federal aid), expenditures by function (such as public welfare and education), indebtedness, and cash and security holdings. This follows the preliminary release of data for 18 states in November 2007.
