Disability Information From 2007 ACS

According to the 2007 American Community Survey, 41.2 million people have some level of disability. They represent 15 percent of the civilian noninstitutionalized population 5 and older. Six percent of children 5 to 15 have disabilities, 12 percent of people 16 to 64 have disabilities, and 41 percent of adults 65 and older have disabilities. Fifteen percent of females reported a disability, and 14 percent of males reported a disability. Find out more using American FactFinder!

Estimates of State and County Population by Age, Sex, Race and Hispanic Origin: July 1, 2008. Tables of population estimates by demographic characteristics for the nation's states and counties.

Census 2000 Foreign-Born Population Map Series by Selected Countries of Birth. These state level maps show percent distributions and some detailed socioeconomic characteristics from Census 2000 for the foreign-born population in the United States and Puerto Rico for selected countries of birth, such as Mexico, China, the Philippines, India, and El Salvador. Comparative maps for the native and total foreign-born populations are also provided. The socioeconomic characteristics include poverty rate, public assistance income, labor force participation rate, language ability, and year of entry for non-citizens.

Who Could Afford to Buy a Home in 2004? The latest in a periodic series of reports measuring changes in housing affordability for families and individuals (both owners and renters). Examines the affordability of homes at different price levels, chances of affordability by demographic characteristic, reasons why families and unrelated individuals couldn't afford a home, and the impact of possible policy changes (such as modified down payments and interest rates) on affordability for renters.

2007 Economic Census of Island Areas, Geographic Area Series: Guam. The data include the number of establishments, sales, payroll, number of employees and other data items for Guam - a U.S. territory in the Pacific Ocean -- and its 19 election districts.

2007 Economic Census. This is a series of national-level data files on the various sectors in 2007. The files provide data on the number of establishments, sales, payroll, number of employees, value of product line sales and other data items by industry. Data will be released through October. Recently released:

Older Worker Profiles. Reports (released for each of over 30 states) providing a detailed picture of workers 55 and older at the county and metropolitan area levels for 2004. Based on data from the Local Employment Dynamics program, the reports highlight the age of the states' work force, job gains and losses, industries in which older workers are concentrated, job stability, and earnings.


Governments

Quarterly Public-Employee Retirement Systems Survey: 4th Quarter 2008. This survey provides quarterly summary data on assets, revenue, and expenditure of the largest public-employee retirement systems in the United States, which comprise about 85 percent of national activity among such entities. It provides the most current data about investment decisions by public employee retirement systems, which are among the largest types of institutional investors in the U.S. financial markets. These reports are published three months after each calendar quarter, and show national financial transactions and trends for the past five years.

Population

America's Families and Living Arrangements: 2008. Tables providing national-level demographic characteristics for families and households, such as race, education, and marital status. They also contain data on the composition of the American household, such as single-parent families, fathers as child care providers, grandparents as caregivers, stay-at-home parents, age at first marriage, and number of children.

Computer and Internet Use in the United States: 2007. New national-level data show who is accessing the Internet and why, cross-tabulated by age, sex, race, Hispanic-origin, educational attainment, and employment status. Other data show the results of computer and Internet usage by region, school enrollment, poverty status, gender, disability status, age group, and income. State data shows Internet usage at home versus any location. Also included is whether people are using broadband or dial-up for Internet access. Data come from the Current Population Survey and the Survey of Income and Program Participation.

Educational Attainment in the United States: 2008. Internet tables from the Current Population Survey's Annual Social and Economic Supplement detail education levels by age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, marital status, nativity, occupation, and other demographic characteristics at the national level.

Population Change in Central and Outlying Counties of Metropolitan Statistical Areas: 2000 to 2007. Analysis of population change and demographic components of change in both core and outlying portions of metro areas. This change is examined by region and division, and metro area population size category, as well as for 12 of the most populous metro areas.

Population Dynamics of the Great Plains: 1950 to 2007. Details population trends over the last more than half century in the 376 counties within this vast area stretching across the nation's midsection. Uses a combination of decennial census data and annual population estimates to analyze age structure and components of change, among other topics.

2007 Economic Census: Mining Industry Series. This is a series of national-level data files on the mining sector (NAICS 21). These include data for industries such as crude petroleum, natural gas, gold, silver, iron, copper, lead, sand, gravel, and others. The files provide data on the number of establishments, shipments, payroll, number of employees, value of product shipments, and other data items by industry. These data will be released through June 2009.

2007 Economic Census: Construction Industry Series. This is a series of national-level data files on the construction sector (NAICS 23). These include data for residential and nonresidential building contractors, civil engineering and specialty trade contractors, builders, remodelers, industrial and commercial construction and others. The files provide data on the number of establishments, value of business done, payroll, the number of employees, and other data items by industry. These data will be released through June 2009.

2007 Nonemployer Statistics. Statistics providing an annual look at small, unincorporated businesses operated mostly by self-employed individuals. Data originating from tax return information of the Internal Revenue Service show the number of establishments and sales by industry at the county, metro area, state, and national levels. Data from businesses with paid employees are in the County Business Patterns report.


Governments

Public Education Finances: 2007. This report offers a comprehensive look at school district revenues, expenditures, debt, and assets. Highlights include spending on salaries, construction, support services, administration, and transportation. These figures allow users to examine per pupil expenditures, and compare federal, state, and local funding sources for public education systems by state.

Nation's Population Growing Older, More Diverse

The U.S. Census Bureau's newly released national population estimates show that our nation is becoming older and more racially and ethnically diverse. The estimates found that nearly half (47 percent) of the nation's children younger than five were a minority in 2008, with 25 percent being Hispanic. For all children under 18, 44 percent were a minority and 22 percent were Hispanic.

The U.S. population is also growing older: the median age reached 36.8 in 2008, up 1.5 years since 2000. There were 38.9 million people 65 and older in 2008, comprising 12.8 percent of the total population. Of this group, 5.7 million were 85 years old and older. In 2000, 12.4 percent of the total population was 65 and older. You can find these facts and more, in our 2008 Population Estimates!

Geographical Mobility: 2008. Series of tables which describe the comparison between place of residence at the time of the March survey and place of residence one year earlier. The tables include data on types of moves, the characteristics of movers and reasons why people moved. The data are from the 2008 Current Population Survey's Annual Social and Economic Supplement, which is conducted in February, March and April at about 100,000 addresses nationwide.

Educational Attainment in the United States

Educational Attainment in the United States: 2008 is a series of tables containing data by characteristics such as age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, marital status, occupation, industry, nativity, citizenship status and period of entry. Highlights include:

  • Workers with a high school degree earned an average of $31,286 in 2007, while those with a bachelor’s degree earned an average of $57,181.
  • The race and Hispanic origin data show that 53 percent of Asians in the U.S. had a bachelor’s degree or more education. For non-Hispanic whites, it was 33 percent.  For blacks, it was 20 percent, and for Hispanics, it was 13 percent.
  • Among younger adults (age 25-29), 88 percent had completed high school, and 31 percent had completed college.
  • Among adults 75 and over, 73 percent had completed high school and 17 percent had completed college.

The data are from the Current Population Survey’s Annual Social and Economic supplement, which is conducted in February, March and April at about 100,000 addresses nationwide.

Emergency Planning and Preparation

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the number of people living in areas that could be most affected by acts of nature, and uses data from the American Community Survey and other sources to show demographic and economic information, such as median housing values, median income, access to vehicles, and poverty levels. The local data is critical to emergency planning, preparedness, and recovery efforts. The data for areas affected by Red River flooding in North Dakota and Minnesota will be available in late April/early May. Population

America's Families and Living Arrangements: 2008. Tables providing national-level demographic characteristics for families and households, such as race, education and marital status. They also contain data on the composition of the American household, such as single-parent families, fathers as child care providers, grandparents as caregivers, stay-at-home parents, age at first marriage, and number of children.

Educational Attainment in the United States: 2008. Internet tables from the Current Population Survey's Annual Social and Economic Supplement detail education levels by age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, marital status, nativity, occupation, and other demographic characteristics at the national level.

Population Change in Central and Outlying Counties of Metropolitan Statistical Areas: 2000 to 2007. Analysis of population change and demographic components of change in both core and outlying portions of metro areas. This change is examined by region and division, and metro area population size category, as well as for 12 of the most populous metro areas.

Who Could Afford to Buy a Home in 2004? The latest in a periodic series of reports measuring changes in housing affordability for families and individuals (both owners and renters). Examines the affordability of homes at different price levels, chances of affordability by demographic characteristic, reasons why families and unrelated individuals couldn't afford a home, and the impact of possible policy changes (such as modified down payments and interest rates) on affordability for renters.

Construction Spending (Put-in-Place): March 2009. Press release showing estimates of the value of total new construction put-in-place by type of construction (residential and non-residential), annual value,, and by type of owner (private and public). Scheduled for release May 4, 2009.

Monthly Wholesale Trade: Sales and Inventories: March 2009. Press release showing estimates for sales, inventories on a non-LIFO ("last in-first out") basis, and stock-sales ratios for merchant wholesalers by three-digit major kind-of-business groups. Scheduled for release May 8, 2009.

U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services: March 2009. Press release showing monthly exports, general imports (including data by country), and limited data on imports for consumption. Scheduled for release May 12, 2009.

Advance Monthly Sales for Retail and Food Services: April 2009. Press release presenting advance monthly estimates of retail store sales by kind-of-business groups.
