World's Population Getting Older
The world's 65-and-older population is projected to triple by midcentury, from 516 million in 2009 to 1.53 billion in 2050, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In the United States, the population 65 and older will more than double by 2050, rising from 39 million today to 89 million. There are currently four countries with 20 percent or more of their population 65 and older: Germany, Italy, Japan and Monaco. By 2030, 55 countries are expected to have at least one-in-five of their total population in this age category; by 2050, the number of countries could rise to more than 100. Comparing ACS Data to Other Sources
Although the American Community Survey (ACS) produces population, demographic and housing estimates, it is the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program that produces and disseminates the official estimates of the population for the nation, states, counties, cities and towns and estimates of housing units for states and counties. The ACS should be used to examine housing, demographic, social, and economic characteristics of the population. Detailed guidance on how to compare ACS data to other Census data sets is available on our web site.
Recently Released
Population
Age and Sex: 2007 and 2008. A series of detailed tables with data on a wide range of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics by five-year age groups and sex. Topics covered include marital status, educational attainment, nativity and citizenship status, labor force and employment status, occupation, earnings, poverty and housing tenure. The data come from the Current Population Survey.
Computer and Internet Use in the United States: 2007. New national-level data show who is accessing the Internet and why, cross-tabulated by age, sex, race, Hispanic-origin, educational attainment, and employment status. Other data show the results of computer and Internet usage by region, school enrollment, poverty status, gender, disability status, age group, and income. State data shows Internet usage at home versus any location. Also included is whether people are using broadband or dial-up for Internet access. Data come from the Current Population Survey and the Survey of Income and Program Participation.
International Data Base. There are four countries with 20 percent or more of their populations 65 and over. How many countries will be dealing with this issue in 2030, or by 2050? These statistics update the world population estimates and projections with 2009 figures, including projections by age for 227 countries and areas. The International Data Base offers a variety of demographic indicators on population size and growth, age and sex composition, mortality, fertility and net migration.
Older Population in the United States: 2007 and 2008. A series of detailed tables with data on a wide range of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of people 55 and older. Topics covered include marital status, educational attainment, nativity and citizenship status, labor force and employment status, occupation, earnings, poverty and housing tenure. The data, collected by the Current Population Survey, pertain to the noninstitutionalized population and are shown for selected age groups.
Population Change in Central and Outlying Counties of Metropolitan Statistical Areas: 2000 to 2007 [PDF 7.79 MB]. Detailed tables providing an analysis of population change and demographic components of change in both core and outlying portions of metro areas. This change is examined by region and division, and metro area population size category, as well as for 12 of the most populous metro areas.

Population
Population Dynamics of the Great Plains: 1950 to 2007. Details population trends over the last more than half century in the 376 counties within this vast area stretching across the nation's midsection. Uses a combination of decennial census data and annual population estimates to analyze age structure and components of change, among other topics.
Subcounty Population Estimates: July 1, 2008. New Orleans, continuing its recovery from Hurricane Katrina, had the nation's fastest growth rate among large cities (100,000 or more population) last year. Find out whether it will repeat this distinction when July 1, 2008, population estimates of the nation's incorporated places - cities, towns, villages and boroughs - are released.

2007 Economic Census: Mining Industry Series. This is a series of national-level data files on the mining sector (NAICS 21). These include data for industries such as crude petroleum, natural gas, gold, silver, iron, copper, lead, sand, gravel, and others. The files provide data on the number of establishments, shipments, payroll, number of employees, value of product shipments, and other data items by industry. These data will be released through June 2009.
2007 Economic Census: Construction Industry Series. This is a series of national-level data files on the construction sector (NAICS 23). These include data for residential and nonresidential building contractors, civil engineering and specialty trade contractors, builders, remodelers, industrial and commercial construction and others. The files provide data on the number of establishments, value of business done, payroll, the number of employees, and other data items by industry. These data will be released through June 2009.
2007 Nonemployer Statistics. Statistics providing an annual look at small, unincorporated businesses operated mostly by self-employed individuals. Data originating from tax return information of the Internal Revenue Service show the number of establishments and sales by industry at the county, metro area, state, and national levels. Data from businesses with paid employees are in the County Business Patterns report.
Governments
Public Education Finances: 2007. This report offers a comprehensive look at school district revenues, expenditures, debt, and assets. Highlights include spending on salaries, construction, support services, administration, and transportation. These figures allow users to examine per pupil expenditures, and compare federal, state, and local funding sources for public education systems by state.

High-Speed More Prevelant Than Dial-Up!
New data from the U.S. Census Bureau show that 62 percent of households reported using Internet access in the home in 2007, an increase from 18 percent in 1997. The 2007 Internet and Computer Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey contains a wealth of information on how and where we are using computers.

New Notify Me Feature for Industry and Economic Census Geographic Area Series Reports
Release of the 2007 Economic Census "Industry Series" reports began in April and will continue through the end of the year. These reports, available through American FactFinder, provide national statistics on each of about 1,000 industries. For the first time, the Census Bureau is offering a service, called NotifyMe, that alerts data users when particular reports are available.
Users just select one or more industries from a list of checkboxes and enter their email address. That's it! Later on, when the industry is released, we will send an e-mail with a link to the data. It couldn't be easier.
Starting this summer, we will expand the NotifyMe service to include the 2007 Economic Census Geographic Area Series reports. These reports, covering each state and 18 sectors, will be released starting in November. Once again, we will alert users when we release the reports they need.
