Printing of 2010 Census Questionnaires Under Way

The U.S. Census Bureau has begun printing 2010 Census questionnaires as the agency continues preparations for next year's count of the U.S. population. The new questionnaire, which every residential address will receive, is designed to be one of the shortest since the first census in 1790, asking just 10 questions and taking about 10 minutes to complete.

Population

An Aging World: 2008. An examination of demographic and socioeconomic trends regarding the world's population of people 65 and older. Explores topics such as health, disability status, gender balance, marital status, living arrangements, education and literacy, labor force participation and retirement and pensions.

Population Dynamics of the Great Plains: 1950 to 2007. Details population trends over the last more than half century in the 376 counties within this vast area stretching across the nation's midsection. Uses a combination of decennial census data and annual population estimates to analyze age structure and components of change, among other topics.

Subcounty Population Estimates: July 1, 2008. July 1, 2008 population estimates of the nation's incorporated places - cities, towns, villages, and boroughs.

Working Paper No. 84, Hispanics in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands (PDF - 806 KB). This paper provides a statistical portrait of the Hispanic-origin population in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands using data from Census 2000. Data on demographic, social and economic characteristics of the Hispanic population for all three areas presented along with graphs and tables.

USA Counties. This latest update features more than 6,000 data items at the national, state, and county level from a variety of sources. New and revised data items include 2008 age, sex, race and Hispanic origin; 2006 births, deaths, and infant deaths; 2007 Census of Agriculture; 2008 civilian labor force; 2007 personal income and earnings; 2007 total employment by industry; and 2008 building permits.

Voting and Registration in the Election of November 2008. New tables from the Current Population Survey examine how many people went to the polls, who went to the polls and why some people did not vote. Voting rates are available by state, including by age, sex, race and Hispanic-origin.

US International Trade in Goods and Services: May 2009. Press release showing monthly exports, general imports (including data by country), and limited data on imports for consumption.

Advance Monthly Sales for Retail and Food Services: June 2009. Press release presenting advance monthly estimates of retail store sales by kind-of-business groups. Report includes seasonally adjusted estimates and percentage changes for major kind-of-business groups.

Manufacturing and Trade Inventories and Sales: May 2009. Press release showing sales, inventories, and inventories-to-sales ratios for the combined domestic activities of retailers, wholesalers, and manufacturers.

Housing Starts and Building Permits: June 2009. Press release showing data for housing starts, completions, and building permits.


Economic Census and Surveys

2007 Economic Census. This is a series of national-level data files on the various sectors in 2007. The files provide data on the number of establishments, sales, payroll, number of employees, value of product line sales and other data items by industry. Data will be released through October. Recently released: - Real Estate and Rental and Leasing Industry Series

2009 1st Quarter Summary of State and Local Government Tax Revenue. Quarterly tax revenue data on property, sales, license, income, and other taxes. Data are shown for individual state governments as well as national-level estimates of total state and local taxes, including 12-month calculations. This quarterly survey has been conducted continuously since 1962.

2007 Nonemployer Statistics. The United States added nearly 1 million nonemployer businesses between 2006 and 2007, bringing the total to 21.7 million. These statistics provide an annual look at small, unincorporated businesses operated mostly by self-employed individuals. Data originating from tax return information show the number of establishments and sales by industry at the county, metro area, state, and national levels.

Economic Census and Surveys

Consolidated Federal Funds Report: 2008 and Federal Aid to States for Fiscal Year 2008. These two reports provide an overview of federal spending at the national, state, and county levels. The data are obtained from federal agencies and describe spending for procurement contracts, salaries and wages, direct payments, loans and insurance, as well as federal grants to state and local governments.

2007 Business Expenses for Wholesale and Retail Trades. This supplement to the annual surveys of wholesale and retail trades provides detailed data on business operating expenses. Expense data, along with cost of goods sold and sales, is one of the key ingredients used by market researchers to develop a profit/loss analysis. This expense data covers such items as labor costs, expensed materials and supplies, purchased advertising, rent, utilities, and depreciation.

Quarterly Public-Employee Retirement Systems Survey: 1st Quarter 2009. This survey provides quarterly summary data on assets, revenue and expenditure of the largest public-employee retirement systems in the United States, which comprise about 85 percent of national activity among such entities. It provides the most current data about investment decisions by public employee retirement systems, which are among the largest types of institutional investors in the U.S. financial markets. These reports are published three months after each calendar quarter and show national financial transactions and trends for the past five years.


Governments

Public Education Finances: 2007. This report offers a comprehensive look at school district revenues, expenditures, debt, and assets. Highlights include spending on salaries, construction, support services, administration, and transportation. These figures allow users to examine per pupil expenditures, and compare federal, state, and local funding sources for public education systems by state.

Fact of the Day

New Orleans Population Getting Closer to Pre-Katrina Levels

The population of New Orleans grew 8.2 percent in 2008, faster than any other large city in the U.S., according to population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau. As of July 1, 2008, the population of New Orleans was 311,853, up from 210,768 in 2006 following Hurricane Katrina but still below the pre-hurricane level of 484,674 based on the 2000 Census.

Population

Age and Sex: 2007 and 2008. A series of detailed tables with data on a wide range of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics by five-year age groups and sex. Topics covered include marital status, educational attainment, nativity and citizenship status, labor force and employment status, occupation, earnings, poverty, and housing tenure. The data come from the Current Population Survey.

International Data Base. These statistics update the world population estimates and projections with 2009 figures, including projections by age for 227 countries and areas. The International Data Base offers a variety of demographic indicators on population size and growth, age and sex composition, mortality, fertility, and net migration.

Population Change in Central and Outlying Counties of Metropolitan Statistical Areas: 2000 to 2007. Detailed tables and report available in PDF (7.79 MB) providing an analysis of population change and demographic components of change in both core and outlying portions of metro areas. This change is examined by region and division, and metro area population size category, as well as for 12 of the most populous metro areas.
