8.9 million education workers accounted for more than half of the 16.7 million state and local government full-time equivalent employees nationwide in 2008. Besides education, some of the other employment categories that contributed the largest numbers to the state and local government employee workforce were hospitals (998,000), police protection (952,000) and corrections (748,000). Other employment categories include streets and highways, public welfare, health, judicial-legal, financial-administration and fire protection. The Census Bureau has released its new 2010CENSUS.GOV web site. The site features an animated marquee that symbolizes the Census Bureau's place at the intersection of the American experience. By clicking on images representative of the population, visitors can view video vignettes that ease fears about the census and encourage participation in the once-a-decade population count. Alternative Income and Poverty Estimates: 2008. The Census Bureau will release alternative income and poverty estimates covering calendar year 2008. The data were collected from the 2009 Current Population Survey (CPS) Annual Social and Economic Supplement (ASEC). The first set of alternative measures include poverty estimates only and are based on recommendations from a 1995 National Academy of Sciences panel on measuring poverty. These estimates use a broadened definition of income and a set of poverty thresholds that are conceptually consistent with this income measure. The second set of alternative measures includes both income and poverty estimates and shows the impact of cash and noncash benefits and taxes on the distribution of income and prevalence of poverty.
American Community Survey 2006-2008 Data Release. This release includes three-year data for all geographies with populations greater than 20,000, providing only the second look at detailed socioeconomic and housing characteristics for geographies between 20,000 and 64,999 since Census 2000. This follows the September 22 and 29 release of one-year (2008) data for all geographies of 65,000 or more.

The Foreign-Born Labor Force in the United States: 2007. This analysis from American Community Survey data looks at the characteristics of the civilian foreign-born versus native labor force population on topics that include educational attainment, occupation, and industry.
Selected Characteristics of Baby Boomers 42 to 60 Years Old in 2006. PowerPoint presentation provides a look at a variety of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the baby boom generation, such as geographic distribution, marital status, educational attainment and income, and compares them with adults in younger and older age groups.
Custodial Mothers and Fathers and Their Child Support: 2007. This report shows national-level trends of child-support income received by parents for children whose other parent lives elsewhere. The Census Bureau collects detailed information about child-support agreements or awards, such as reported amounts due and received, as well as other socioeconomic characteristics about custodial parents and their families.
School Enrollment in the United States: 2008. Could a recent trend toward two-year colleges be leading to an all-time high in enrollment? These tables examine a host of details about school enrollment for the population 3 years and older by social and economic characteristics, including age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, type of school, labor force status of mothers with school-age children, type of family, employment status of those enrolled in vocational courses, income levels, children of foreign-born and more.
U.S. Population Projections by Age, Sex, Race and Hispanic Origin: 2010-2050. A set of four different national projections by these characteristics, each based on a different assumption about the level of net international migration. Supplements the national projections series released last year.
Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE): 2008. These tables provide estimates of income and poverty for states and counties, as well as estimates of poverty and population for school districts, median household income and poverty rates of various age groups. SAIPE provides annual updates for the administration of federal programs and the allocation of federal funds to local jurisdictions.

America's Families and Living Arrangements: 2007. New report shows that the 5.6 million stay-at-home mothers in 2007 were younger and more likely to be Hispanic and foreign-born than mothers who were in the labor force. Nearly one-fourth of all married-couple families in the U.S. had a stay-at-home mother. This report is based on a special tabulation using data from the Current Population Survey and the American Community Survey to provide a look at the basic trends in household and family composition. It shows state-level variation in the kinds of households children live in, such as married-couple families, unmarried-partner households and single-parent families.

The 2008 American Community Survey includes new questions on health insurance status, marital history and VA service-connected disability rating. Each was added to comply with federal program needs, and each was thoroughly tested prior to inclusion in the American Community Survey in January 2008. The October 2008 CPS October School Enrollment Supplement Public Use File is now available to the public. This file contains 150,957 records that are 1,040 bytes in length. 2008 ACS Data Release. The U.S. Census Bureau has released data from the 2008 American Community Survey. This release includes all one-year estimates from data collected in 2008, including income and poverty estimates. In addition to the full complement of social, economic, and housing data, this release will also include estimates on health insurance coverage, marital history, and veterans' service-connected disability ratings for the first time. These estimates are available for the nation, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, every congressional district, and all counties, places, and metropolitan areas with populations of 65,000 or more.
The Hispanic Origin Population in the United States: 2007 and 2008. National-level tabulations (42 tables) from the Current Population Survey on this population group by characteristics such as citizenship status, age, year of entry, poverty status, and Hispanic origin type. Includes new tabulations on generation, mobility and health insurance status.
Income, Poverty and Health Insurance Coverage: 2008. The nation's official poverty rate in 2008 was 13.2 percent, up from 12.5 percent in 2007. Real median household income fell from $52,163 to $50,303, and the percentage of people without health insurance remained unchanged at 15.4 percent.
