More Subject Detail in Census 2000 Files Means More Use of Compression & DVD
Users familiar with 1990 Census data files will find that the comparable Census 2000 files are larger, mainly to an increase in subject detail (for example, in the case of race).
You'll find, for example, that Census 2000 Summary File 1 for California would require as many as 30 CD-ROMs if published in the fixed ASCII or dBase formats used in 1990. The equivalent 1990 file would have required only six CD-ROMs. For the Census 2000 files, we will publish compressed comma-delimited ASCII which will reduce the data files to small fractions of their original sizes. For value-added disc products with software, we will use commercial solutions, currently being evaluated, that use compressed data formats.
Despite the use of compression, the Census 2000 disc series still could approach 1,000 CD-ROMs (ten times the total number published in 1990). For this reason, we are turning to DVD, which can hold as much data as 7 to 13 standard CD- ROMs, depending on format.
Except for a few national-level summary files, many Census 2000 data products will be released as state-level summary files with each series produced over the course of several months. As states become available, we will release the data on CD. When all state files have been produced, we will assemble the individual files in a manufactured set of DVDs. This will be the case for the PL94-171 state files currently being released and the upcoming Summary Files (the old STFs).
We do not intend to use DVD as the exclusive manufactured medium. We will use CD-ROMs for producing small-size data files that can be stored in one or two CD-ROMs. For example, we plan to produce the Race and Hispanic or Latino Summary File (the P.L. 94-171 "national file"), which is a much smaller file than the state files, on CD-ROM rather than on DVD.
Here's the plan: look for state files on individual CD-ROMs right away and batches of state files on DVDs as soon as everything in a series is released.
