Geography: The Redistricting Census 2000 TIGER/Line^® files are extracts from the Census TIGER^® (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) data base, of selected geographic and cartographic information. They include files for all counties and statistically equivalent entities in the United States and Puerto Rico.

The Redistricting Census 2000 TIGER/Line^® files cover all counties, parishes, boroughs, census geographic areas and equivalent entities for each state and for the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The boundaries of all states, all counties and their statistical equivalents, and all minor civil divisions are those that were legally in effect as of January 1, 2000. The boundaries of incorporated places have varied vintages, while for all other legal areas and nearly all statistical areas, boundaries shown are those that were in effect at the time of the 2000 census. Additionally, the Redistricting Census 2000 TIGER/Line 2000 shows the boundaries for the 106th Congressional District.

The Redistricting Census 2000 Tiger/Line files are specifically intended to support the needs of the redistricting community. Because of the timing of this release it does not include the ZIP Code ^® Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs^TM) nor the final updated address ranges based on the final Census 2000 information. The Redistricting Census 2000 TIGER/Line files will not include files for American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, the Minor Outlying Areas (Midway), and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Census 2000 TIGER/Line files, scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2001, will include files for these areas, as well as the ACTA information and the updated Census 2000 address ranges.

Type of data: Digital geographic data base containing line segments that represent physical features, and legal and statistical boundaries. The 2000 files consist of 17 separate record types, including the basic data record, the shape coordinate points (feature shape records), and geographic area codes that can be used with appropriate software to prepare maps. The Redistricting Census 2000 TIGER/Line ^® files have the same structure as the 1999 TIGER/Line ^® files; there are no record additions or deletions. However, there are some field name, file name, and content changes (click here).

File format & software: Fixed length ASCII. Files are compressed. Decompress with software compatible with PK-ZIP 1.93A. Redistricting Census 2000 TIGER/Line files ^®2000 contain data only and do not include display or mapping software. The product is typically used in conjunction with geographic information systems or similar mapping software.
