WHAT ARE TIGER/CENSUS TRACT STREET INDEX FILES?
The TIGER/Census Tract Street Index files were created from the Census Bureau's TIGER
(Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) database of selected
geographic and cartographic information. TIGER was developed at the Census Bureau to
support the mapping and related geographic activities required by the decennial census and
sample survey programs. TIGER/Census Tract Street Index files are made available to the public
as a tool for determining geographic codes associated with a specific street address. The codes
that this product identifies for a city-style street address are: state, 106th Congressional District,
county, ZIP Code (5-digit only), place, minor civil divisions (MCD) in 20 selected states, and
Census tract or block numbering area codes.
The codes that this product provides for an address are: state, 106th Congressional District,
county, ZIP Code (5-digit only), place, and 1990 Census tract or block numbering area codes.
The TIGER/Census Tract Street Index Version 4 files were extracted from the TIGER database
during early 1999 using the TIGER VTD Phase 2 benchmark from 1998 TIGER . Excepting
census tracts (1990 Census), congressional districts (106th Congress), the vintage of the data
items in these files corresponds to this time frame.
Using it
Reading from left to right, a user will find the street name, including prefix and/or suffix
direction (north, south, etc.) and street type (street, avenue, lane, etc.), the address range for that
portion of the street located within a particular census tract (From..., To...), and the
corresponding census tract number or block numbering area (BNA). This is followed by the ZIP
code, area name (in truncated form, if necessary), 106th Congressional District
code, and area
name FIPS code.
For the following 12 states, (i.e. Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota,
New
Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin) this
field contains either the incorporated place name or the minor civil division (MCD) name if the
record is located outside an incorporated place. For the following 8 states, this field shows the
MCD name if the record is located outside a place: Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska,
North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota.
