GE-90 series
(replacing GE-70 and GE-50 series)
Subject Content: Consists of two general types of maps: the first and most numerous includes maps that show geographic distribution, usually by county, of various demographic and/or economic characteristics by using a variety of colors and/or symbols to portray data values. Some of these maps show special topics -- often with multiple smaller-scale map images or specialized symbolization -- such as population distribution or comparisons by decade of consumption of home heating fuels.
The second type comprise general reference outline maps, which show boundaries and identifiers of geographic entities. For example, the GE-90 base map -- the first map in the series (not yet available) -- shows current county boundaries and names; another map will show boundaries and numbers of the congressional districts of a specific congress; a third will display the components and names of current metropolitan areas.
The basic map scale will be 1:5,000,000, but selected maps will use different scales, as appropriate. Maps on same subject and with same title that are updated, such as the map showing current metropolitan areas, will be identified with a revision number such as GE-90 No. 6-2, GE-90 No. 6-3, and so forth.
