Subject content: This annual series includes a separate report for each State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and a U.S. summary. The divisions of the economy covered are agricultural services, forestry, and fisheries; mining; contract construction; manufacturing; transportation and other public utilities; wholesale trade; retail trade; finance, insurance, and real estate; and services.

The individual State reports present State- and county-level data on number of establishments, employees, and payroll by employment-size class. (Pre-1998 data are not shown at the county level for SIC codes with fewer than 100 employees; 1998- data are not shown at the county level for NAICS codes with fewer than 100 employees) Also included, by major industry group, are data on the number of establishments with 1,000 or more employees, by employment-size class.

Employment data in this report are generally for types of employment that are covered by the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA). Data for employees totally exempt from FICA are excluded: self-employed individuals, employees of private households, railroad employees, agricultural production employees, and most government employees.

The U.S. summary includes data by detailed industry (pre-1998 four-digit SIC level; 1998- NAICS codes) for the United States on number of establishments, employment, and payroll. Data are also shown by employment-size class. Also included, by major industry group, are data on the number of establishments, employees, and payroll of central administrative and auxiliary establishments.
