Subject content: Provides ZIP Code data for 9 of the 18 sectors covered in the 1997 Economic Census. Data include establishments by employment size by NAICS (all covered sectors) for establishments with fewer thatn 5 employees, 5 to 9, 10 t0 19, 20 to 49, 50 to 99, and 100 employees or more and establishments by receipt size class by NAICS (all covered sectors except manufacturing) for establishments operated the entire year with sales or receipts under $100,000, $100, 000 to $249,999, $250, 000 to $499,999, $500,000 to $999,999, and $1 million or more.

Also included are data on sales or reciepts, annual payroll, and number of employees by sector (all covered sectors except manufacturing). Data are not published by detailed NAICS categories.

Sectors covered:

In those sectors marked with an asterisk (*), only firms subject to federal income tax are included. Zip Code statistics do not include tax-exempt firms in the specified sectors, and do not include establishments engaged in mining, utilities, construction, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, information, finance and insurance, real estate and rental and leasing, management of companies and enterprises, and auxiliary establishments. These categories collectively account for over a third of the employment enumerated in the 1997 Economic Census.

Note on disclosure: Because business activity in many ZIP codes is dominated by a very small number of establishments, the sales, payroll, and employment aggregates are frequently suppressed to avoid disclosure of confidential information. Establishment counts by size class, however, are not considered to be a disclosure of confidential information so a data line is present for every kind of business with one or more establishments within a ZIP code.

These data, classified by NAICS, are not generally comparable to ZIP Code statistics from the 1992 and 1987 Economic Censuses or to ZIP Code Business Patterns for 1997 and earlier years because those data sets were classified by Standard Indusrial Classification (SIC) codes. Less than half of the NAICS codes directly correspond to a category in SIC.
