Subject content: A new sample from the 1980 Census was drawn to use every other year from 1985 on. This file contains only the AHS-N scrambled control number and the 1980 census detail data. The scrambled control number may be used to match to any AHS-N file 1985 or later to obtain AHS data for comparison.

The AHS Code Book specified that the 1980 Census data for the AHS sample units would be provided as part of the 1985 National user file. However, because the matched Census data were not available when the 1985 AHS file was released, it was decided that the Census data would be produced as a separate file. This file contains only the 1980 Census micro data along with the AHS control number which can be used to match to any National sample file 1985 or later. Some AHS records built before 1980 will not have a matching Census data record because of Census confidentiality rules - data for these units were shown on other Census user files with other incompatible geographic codes and thus could not be shown for this AHS file.

Geography: Areas identified on each record are regions, metro/non-metro areas, inside/outside central city, urban/rural areas, and place size.
