Geography: Geographic areas identified on each record are regions, metropolitan/non-metropolitan areas, inside/outside central city, urban/rural areas, and place size.

Subject content: These microdata include year structure built, type and number of living quarters, occupancy status, access, number of rooms, presence of commercial or medical establishments on the property, and property value. Additional data focus on kitchen and plumbing facilities, type of heating fuel used, source of water, and sewage disposal; heating and air-conditioning equipment; and major additions, alterations, or repairs made to the property.

In addition to collecting current data on the housing stock, data with broad public interest in recurring or one-time supplements is also collected. Topics include energy conservation, comparative housing information from recent movers, housing and neighborhood quality, and transportation to work.
