Geography: New York City and its five boroughs: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Richmond.

Subject content: Provides estimates on the characteristics of housing units and their occupants for 1987, 1984, 1981 and 1979. Data are presented on the occupancy status, the year structure was built, whether owner or renter occupied, and the condominium status of the unit. Additional data focus on the number of stories, units, and rooms in the structure; the type of heating fuel; plumbing facilities; the existence of cracks or holes in walls or floors; and the occurrence of heating equipment breakdowns. Also available are statistics on household income, the need for public assistance or welfare payments, contract rent amount, rent subsidy needs, the purchase price of the home, monthly mortgage payments, routine maintenance fees, and real estate taxes.

Data for vacant units provide information on the number of stories and rooms, the presence of an elevator, the types of plumbing and kitchen facilities, and the principal type of heating fuel. In addition, estimates are presented on the duration of vacancy, the occupancy status before vacant, whether condominium or cooperative before vacant, the reason the building is not for sale or for rent, and, if for rent or for sale, the asking rent or sales price.
