In this map, we see Taos county in New Mexico. This map displays the census county division using the green boundary that in some areas follows along the auburn-colored census tract boundaries. In this case the census county division divides the county into 5 areas, while there are 6 census tracts visible in this county. Again, census tracts may be altered for each census, while census county divisions and minor civil divisions are designed to be more stable and correspond to more obvious physical boundaries.
Maps displaying minor civil division boundaries would be set up in essentially the same way, with township, town, or district boundaries replacing the census county division boundaries.
