Notes:
The general concept of a Metropolitan Area is that of a core area containing a large population nucleus, together with adjacent communities having a high degree of economic and social integration with that core.
Currently defined Metropolitan Areas are based on application of 1990 standards to 1990 decennial census data and to subsequent Census Bureau population estimates and special census data.
The collective term ”Metropolitan Area" (MA) became effective in 1990. Metropolitan Areas include Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Areas (CMSAs), and Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas (PMSAs).
