New Mexico had the highest proportion of Hispanics. In 8 additional states the proportion of Hispanics was above the national level of 12.5 percent.
In 2000, almost one-third of the total populations of California and Texas were people of Hispanic heritage. In 1990 in both states Hispanics accounted for roughly 25 percent of the population.
Arizona’s Hispanic population increased to over 25 percent, up from 19 percent in 1990.
