Barbara Downs

Chief, Data Analysis and User Education Branch

Barbara Downs is chief of the Data Analysis and User Education Branch in the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey Office. The branch is responsible for the dissemination of documentation, tools, and resources to support users of American Community Survey estimates.

Dr. Downs began her federal career at the U.S. Census Bureau in 1998 as a family demographer in the Fertility and Family Statistics Branch in the Population Division. She has written several reports on fertility and maternity leave. Dr. Downs also served as chief of the Industry and Occupation Statistics Branch for four years and was a member of the Standard Occupation Classification Policy Committee. She is a recipient of the U.S. Census Bureau's Bronze Medal Award.

Dr. Downs received her doctorate degree in Sociology from the University of Michigan, with concentrations in demography and family and kinship.
