Jennifer M. Ortman

Population Projections Branch, U.S. Census Bureau

Jennifer M. Ortman is a demographer working in the Population Projections Branch in the Population Division. She currently leads the team responsible for the production of national projections. She has presented her work at numerous academic conferences and professional meetings and recently gave presentations on the evaluation of the Census Bureau's 2008 and 2009 National Projections and a new approach for projecting international migration that was used in the 2012 National Projections.

In 2011, Ortman received two Bronze Medal Awards for her work on demographic estimates used to evaluate the 2010 Census and intercensal estimates, a consistent time series of population estimates between the 2000 and 2010 censuses.

Ortman received her doctorate in sociology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with a focus on language use across immigrant generations. She also received a master's in sociology and a bachelor's in anthropology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
