Stephen L. Buckner

Director, Center for New Media & Promotion
U.S. Census Bureau

Stephen L. Buckner is director of the Center for New Media & Promotions at the U.S. Census Bureau. His office is responsible for transforming census.gov and exploring new ways of communicating through the Web, social media and evolving communications channels.

With over 5 million pages, the Census Bureau's Website is one of the largest in the federal government and equivalent in size to Amazon.com. In collaboration with the CIO, Buckner is turning this vast resource into a platform for data exploration and access for the entire spectrum of users. Other technology and mobile platforms are being leveraged to display and share statistical information in new and innovative ways. Most recently, he managed the successful creation and development of the agency's first-ever public API and mobile app — America's Economy.

His background in communications includes working in several public relations agencies prior to joining the Census Bureau in 1998. Buckner holds a master's degree in public administration from Florida State University, and a bachelor's degree in public relations from the University of Florida. He currently lives in Springfield, Virginia, with his wife, Linda, and their four daughters.
