Jeff Barnett is chief of the Local Government Finance and Statistics Branch. He is responsible for overseeing data collection and producing annual financial statistics on our nation's nearly 90,000 local governments, including data on revenues, expenditures, public debt, and cash and security holdings. In addition, he is responsible for directing the Local Government Finance Component of the 2012 Census of Governments. The local government data produced are used by the Bureau of Economic Analysis as inputs into the state and local government portion of GDP estimates. In addition, the data are used by the Federal Reserve Board, the Council of Economic Advisors, as well as a variety of federal agencies, policy researchers, and state and local governments.
Jeff received his bachelor's degree in economics from Howard University and a master's degree in management from the University of Maryland, University College. In addition, he holds a master's certificate in project management from George Washington University. He has the received the Department of Commerce Bronze Medal and the Census Bureau Director's Award for Innovation for his outstanding contributions to the Census Bureau's economic programs. In addition, he is a graduate of the Department of Commerce Executive Leadership Development Program.
