Martin O'Connell is chief of the Fertility and Family Statistics Branch. After receiving his doctorate in demography from the University of Pennsylvania, he joined the U.S. Census Bureau in 1976. His research over the decades has ranged from issues related to childbearing, teenage and out-of-wedlock fertility, child care and labor force issues faced by employed mothers, and changes in the household composition of American families. Most recently, he has extensively examined issues related to estimating the number of unmarried couples and same-sex couple households.
