Michael C. Cook, Sr.
Chief of Public Affairs and Media Events
Michael C. Cook, Sr., is chief of the Public Affairs and Media Events Branch in the Public Information Office at the U.S. Census Bureau. He is responsible for public affairs and media events activities supporting the more than 150 censuses and surveys conducted that measure America's people, places and our economy. He serves as a spokesperson for the agency. Cook received a Census Bureau Bronze Medal Award in 2012 for his contributions to the 1940 Census Records Release Promotion Plan.
Cook previously served as chief of the 2010 Census Media Relations Branch where, with a staff of 15 employees, he oversaw the public affairs and media relations activities for the award-winning 2010 Census campaign that was completed on schedule and 25 percent under budget, returning $1.87 billion to the U.S. Treasury. Cook received a Census Bureau Bronze Medal Award in 2010 for his contributions to the 2010 Census "Portrait of America" Road Tour.
Cook began his career at the Census Bureau in 1999 as a marketing specialist during the 2000 Census. He has served as team leader for the Census Bureau exhibits program and as a marketing specialist for the Census Bureau with a focus on foreign trade statistics. He's played a pivotal role in the Census Bureau's marketing and outreach strategy to the U.S. foreign trade community.
Cook has also provided marketing and program management consultation to the International Trade Administration's U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service (USFCS). He guided them through business process improvement and completion of an integrated communications plan.
In addition to his federal service, Cook has a vast background in program and marketing/communications management with national nonprofit, institutions of higher education and private sector organizations.
Cook holds a bachelor's degree in marketing and a master's degree in business administration from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He obtained a master's certificate in project management from George Washington University and is a 2009 graduate of the U.S. Department of Commerce's Executive Leadership Development Program.
Born in Italy and raised on military bases worldwide, Cook lives in Odenton, Md., with his wife, daughter and son.
