Michael Planty

Michael Planty is Chief of the Victimization Statistics Unit with the Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice. He has been involved in the design and analysis of national large-scale household and school-based surveys in the areas of education and criminal justice, working as a statistician and research analyst within the public and private sectors. His research interests have focused on the sociology of education in high schools and the measurement of crime and victimization. In 2010 he published a book (with Deven Carlson) entitled Understanding Education Indicators: A Practical Primer for Research and Policy with Columbia University, Teachers College Press. He holds a B.S. in biology and secondary education from SUNY College of Environmental Science/Syracuse University, a M.S. in forensic science from George Washington University, and a Ph.D. from the School of Public Affairs at American University. Mike lives in Rockville, MD with his wife and 2 children.
