Raul E. Cisneros
Chief of Media Relations, Public Information Office
Raul E. Cisneros is the Chief of Media Relations in the Public Information Office at the U.S. Census Bureau. He is responsible for public affairs and media relations activities supporting the 2010 Census, the American Community Survey and other Census Bureau programs.
Cisneros was previously the chief of the 2010 Census Publicity Office at the U.S. Census Bureau. In that capacity he oversaw the development of an award winning 2010 Census paid media campaign in 28 languages to support the 2010 Census. His office also managed a $368 million communications contract for advertising services, public relations activities, partnerships, the Census in Schools programs and online interaction.
Prior to this position, Cisneros served as chief of the 2010 Census Media Relations Branch in the Public Information Office. He was in charge of public affairs and media relations activities for the 2010 Census and served as spokesperson.
Cisneros has extensive public relations and leadership experience and has worked with public and private sector stakeholders nationally and the state and local levels.
Before joining the Census Bureau, Cisneros served in a number of capacities at the U.S. Small Business Administration from 2001 to 2008. He was director of communications, associate administrator for field operations, deputy chief of staff and acting district director for Puerto Rico/U.S. Virgin Islands.
In addition to his federal service, Cisneros has also worked for the state of California as an environmental engineer, assistant state treasurer and as a member of the communications staff in the California State Senate.
Cisneros has been a public relations consultant and commentator for print, radio and television. He also has private sector experience working as an engineer and supervisor at the Campbell Soup Company.
Born and raised in the Republic of Panama, Cisneros earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado where he graduated with military distinction.
In 2009 Hispanic Business magazine listed Cisneros as one of the nation's 100 influentials.
Cisneros lives in Laurel, Md., with his wife, Anita and their daughter. He is active in the community and serves as a board member for the Anne Arundel County Partnership for Children, Youth and Families.
