For each reference date, the first record lists the population counts for all ages combined. The remaining records list the population counts by single year of age in ascending order. Explanation of Data Fields (ASCII File): Series: Monthly estimates for April 1, 2000 to July 1, 2004 have a series designation "4" and a letter to represent the population universe: "R" resident population; "P" resident population plus armed forces overseas; "C" civilian population; and, "N" civilian non-institutional population. Month: Monthly estimates for April 1, 2000 and onward designate the months Numerically for each year. A "1" indicates population data for January 1; a "2" indicates population data for February 1; and so on. There are two April 1st populations for the year 2000: the census population and the estimates base population. April 1, 2000 (census) is coded month 4.1 and April 1, 2000 (estimates base) is coded month 4.2. Year: Year is identified by four digits. Age Group: The total population code is 999, which is the first record for each year. This is followed by 0 to 99, which are individual single years of age. Code 100 is the population 100 years of age and over. Sex, race and Hispanic origin: Population data are shown for a total of 45 categories. The first category shows the total population of the age group. The remaining 44 categories list the male and female populations, respectively for the following racial and/or Hispanic origin categories. On the Census 2000 questionnaire, respondents were given the option of marking or selecting one or more races to indicate their racial identity.1/ The choices included "Some other race." For the purpose of creating population estimates, the census race distribution was modified to be consistent with the race categories that appear on the administrative records sources used to produce population estimates. The race modification involved distributing the responses of "Some other race" to other specified race categories. For more information see http://www.census.gov/popest/archives/files/MRSF-01-US1.html The estimates by race are available in two formats. 1. Estimates are available in six mutually exclusive and exhaustive race categories that sum to the total population. People who selected only one race are referred to as the race alone population. There are five such categories: White alone; Black or African American alone; American Indian and Alaska Native alone; Asian alone; Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone. The second format presents race data as tallies of race responses. People who reported only one race together with those who reported that same race plus one or more other races are combined to create the race alone or in combination categories. For example, the estimate of the White alone or in combination group consists of those respondents who reported White alone plus those who reported White combined with one or more other race groups such as "White and Black" or "White and Asian and American Indian and Alaska Native". The alone or in combination categories are tallies of responses rather than respondents. That is, the alone or in combination categories are not mutually exclusive. Individuals who reported two races were counted in two separate and distinct alone or in combinations race categories, while those who reported three races were counted in three categories and so on. Consequently, the sum of all alone or in combination categories equals the number of races reported (i.e. responses) which exceeds the total population. Note: Hispanic origin is considered an ethnicity, not a race. Hispanics may be of any race. ----------------------------------- 1/ The question on race for Census 2000 was different from the one for the 1990 census in several ways. Most significantly, respondents were given the option of selecting one or more race categories to indicate their racial identities. Because of these changes, the Census 2000 data on race are not directly comparable with data from the 1990 census or earlier censuses. Caution must be used when interpreting changes in the racial composition of the U.S. population over time. 2/ "Some other race" was included in Census 2000 for respondents who were unable to identify with the five Office of Management and Budget race categories. Respondents who provided write-in entries such as Moroccan, South African, Belizean, or a Hispanic origin (for example, Mexican, Puerto Rican, or Cuban) are included in the Some other race category. The Some other race alone category consists predominately (97.0 percent) of people of Hispanic origin, and is not a standard OMB race category.
