Subnational Mapping

The U.S. Census Bureau develops an annual global subnational population data set that serves as the demographic base for Oak Ridge National Laboratory's LandScan Global Population Dataset. This data set contains total and 5-year age/sex group population data for more than 60,000 subnational administrative areas around the world.

Administrative areas (ADMs) include the equivalents of U.S. states, counties, and townships in each country and territory in the world. We gather administrative boundary maps from national sources, online repositories, and federal and international agencies, then assess their quality and how well they link with the ADMs that appear in each country's or territory’s census. While ADMs in the U.S. largely remain constant from year to year, internal boundaries are frequently redrawn in other countries.

National census data are produced by the world’s 200 national statistical agencies. We constantly update our data archive with the latest census results worldwide, using data from statistical agencies’ websites and the public International Collection of the U.S. Census Bureau Library. After projecting census data forward to the current date, we link population data to subnational maps. We are currently developing a global, subnational database linked to administrative maps that we plan to provide online upon completion.

U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)

The U.S. Census Bureau calculates subnational 5-year age/sex group population estimates and projections for the years 2000 through 2015 for countries sharing bilateral efforts with the U.S. Government as part of PEPFAR. The PEPFAR program provides assistance to countries around the world whose populations suffer from a high rate of HIV infection. Our subnational population data are consistent with the national projections from the U.S. Census Bureau's International Data Base and are linked to digital maps of the subnational administrative areas. These products are freely available to the public health community and the general public through the Spatial Data Repository  Link to a non-federal Web site.
