APPENDIX A. FIELD OF TRAINING CATEGORIES.

Questions on field of training were asked of people who received a vocational certificate or higher degree. People who received an advanced degree were asked about two fields of training: their advanced degree field and their bachelor's degree field. Al l others were asked about only one field. They were asked to categorize their fields as follows:

Different combinations of the above-named fields were used for reporting data on field of training. Table 3 in this table package lists the counts of people according to the listed field they gave from the classifications above. These fields are also li sted in Table A1.

Table A in the report accompanying these tables (P70-72) uses detailed fields.

In Tables 4A to 4D, the same categories were used, although fields where there were less than 100,000 estimated people were suppressed.

In Tables 4E to 4N, a collapsed set of fields of study were used in order to facilitate comparison across degree levels. These collapsed fields are referred to as "basic classification" in Table A1. In other words, the classification "business" used in T able 4E includes people with associate degrees in business/office management, communications and visual and commercial arts.
