Question on Residence Five Years Ago

Census 2000 migration data for the period 1995 to 2000 are derived from a two-part question on the Census 2000 long form.

The first question asked if the respondent lived in the same house or apartment five years earlier:

Did this person live in this house or apartment 5 years ago (on April 1, 1995)?

Respondents answering "No, different house in the United States" were then asked where they lived 5 years earlier:

Where did this person live 5 years ago?
