Universe Description
Most of the nations economic activity is covered in the series. Data are excluded for self-employed persons, domestic service workers, railroad employees, agricultural production workers, most government employees, and employees on ocean-borne vessels or in foreign countries. The file excludes governmental establishments except for liquor stores (Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code 592), wholesale liquor establishments (SIC 518), depository institutions (SIC 60), federal and federally-sponsored credit agencies (SIC 611), and hospitals (SIC 806).
Subject-Matter Description
This file provides data on total number of establishments, mid-March employment, first quarter payroll, annual payroll, and number of establishments by nine employment size classes. Establishment counts represent the number of locations with paid employees anytime during the year. Mid-march employment consists of full and part time employees who are on the payroll in the period including March 12. Payrolls include all form of compensation and are shown in thousands of dollars.
Industry Coverage
Data are provided by major group, which is represented by the first two digits of the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code, in the following economic divisions: agricultural services, forestry, and fishing; mining; construction; manufacturing; transportation and public utilities; wholesale trade; retail trade; finance, insurance, and real estate; and services. Data are tabulated by major industry group as defined in the Standard Industrial Classification Manual: 1987.
Geographic Coverage
For states outside New England, data are provided for Metropolitan Statistical Areas as defined by the Office of Management and Budget. For New England states data are provided by New England Census Metropolitan Areas as defined by the U.S. Census Bureaus. Attachment 4 provides details on metropolitan area definitions.
